Summary/Objectives:

The Development Director is responsible for leading and managing the agency’s development plan and activities to achieve fundraising goals, includes mail appeals, corporate & individual donations, grants, events, major gifts, endowment gifts and planned giving. Support the agency’s fundraising activities, including management of a personal portfolio of major gift donors and prospects for cultivation and solicitation. Implement comprehensive donor prospecting, cultivation and stewardship activities. Manage personnel and work flow to ensure optimal efficiency and effectiveness, and accuracy of donor database and reports. Works with the President & CEO and the leadership team to promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values a commitment to quality and service excellence.

  1. Lead and manage the agency’s development plan to ensure optimal success with annual fund appeal, corporate support, grants, individual donations, special events, major gifts, endowment gifts and planned giving.
  2. Implement comprehensive donor prospecting, cultivation and stewardship activities. Manage a personal portfolio of major gift prospects for cultivation and solicitation to support agency’s programs and priorities.
  3. Responsible for setting short term and long-term goals for fund development. Develop and monitor fundraising metrics to evaluate success. Carry out strategic priorities, such as growth of major gifts and endowment fundraising. 
  4. Work with the President & CEO and Board members or other solicitors to schedule and support fundraising calls and priority activities. Serve as the liaison to Development committee of the Board of Directors.
  5. Serve as an ambassador for the organization with professional organizations, funding agencies, businesses, governmental agencies, churches, donors, other non-profits and the general public.
  6. Hire and supervise program staff and facilitate their professional development, including the Communications and Events Manager and the Development Data Specialist & Event Liaison. Manage staff performance to ensure optimal efficiency and adherence to Barnabas Center policies and procedures and conduct annual performance reviews. Ensure that the highest customer and ethical standards are met in all donor/volunteer interactions.
  7. Oversee management of donor database to ensure accuracy of information and reports related to prospects, existing donors, granting organizations and corporate contributions; and ensure timely acknowledgements of gifts/grants. 
  8. Oversee external fundraising and communications and marketing activities to ensure that all materials and activities effectively communicate the organization’s brand and messages. Provide support for the Barnabas Center Ambassador program.
  9. Manage grant writing and reporting activities to ensure effectiveness and quality of proposals; and stewardship and compliance with restrictions and requirements.
  10. Manage Capital Campaign with President & CEO, Communications & Events Manager, and the Development Data Specialist & Event Liaison. 
  11. Monitor, manage and report on budgeted program expenditures; provide input in budget development. 
  12. Promote a culture of safety and maintain a safe environment for employees, volunteers and customers.
  13. Foster a culture in which personnel demonstrate the values of the organization in every aspect of their work and interactions with each other and customers. 
  14. Other duties as assigned by the President/CEO.

Competency (knowledge, skills, abilities): 

Demonstrated skill in productive work with board/leadership volunteers including fundraising and development planning. Proven success in building, cultivating and stewarding relationships. Experience with face-to-face fundraising, securing large gifts and donor stewardship to achieve revenue goals.

Ability to research and prospect for new sources of fundraising. Excellent oral and written communications skills including the ability to compose letters, write grants and create corporate proposals. Attention to detail, and strong organizational and analytical skills. Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook); and experience in Donor Perfect a plus. Demonstrated experience with AI. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position manages all employees of the Development department and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within that department.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position primary work hours Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel:

This position requires up to 25% travel. Occasionally travel is outside the local area and overnight.

Required Education and Experience:

Minimum of bachelor’s degree in business management/administration or related field. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in fundraising/development with evidence of securing increased funding from corporate and individual donors. 

Preferred Education and Experience:

Master’s degree in business management/administration, or related field with five to ten years’ experience in fundraising/development preferred.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications (licensure, certification):

CFRE Certified Professional. AFP member.
