LIFEGUARD JOB DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT: Aquatics

REPORTS TO: Aquatics Manager/Pool Supervisor

FLSA: Hourly/Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lifeguard at Villa Roma Resort & Conference Center is responsible for ensuring the safety of guests at all aquatic facilities by providing vigilant supervision, enforcing safety rules, and responding quickly to emergency situations. This position requires maintaining a friendly and professional demeanor while upholding the Resort's mission of providing superior service and creating lasting memories for our guests, in accordance with our Six Points of Service Excellence.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety & Supervision

  • Maintain constant surveillance of pool and aquatic areas, acting immediately to prevent accidents
  • Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations in a professional manner
  • Identify hazardous conditions and respond promptly to prevent injuries
  • Perform appropriate water rescues and administer first aid/CPR when necessary
  • Complete accurate and detailed reports for all incidents or accidents
  • Participate in regular in-service training sessions to maintain skills
  • Conduct regular equipment checks and report any malfunctions or concerns

Facility Maintenance

  • Inspect pool areas, equipment, and water conditions for hazards or cleanliness issues
  • Maintain a clean and orderly pool deck and surrounding areas
  • Assist with water testing and chemical monitoring as assigned by supervisor
  • Properly store and maintain rescue equipment and first aid supplies
  • Support overall cleanliness of locker rooms and guest amenity areas

Guest Services

  • Provide exceptional customer service in alignment with Villa Roma's credo and service standards
  • Answer guest questions regarding pool facilities, hours, and resort activities
  • Assist guests with special needs as appropriate
  • Support special events and programs taking place in aquatic areas
  • Promote a positive and enjoyable environment for all guests

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Accurately document pool usage, incident reports, and maintenance concerns
  • Maintain current certifications and participate in ongoing training
  • Adhere to all Villa Roma policies and procedures
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as scheduled
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Aquatics Manager

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Experience and Education

  • Current certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED from American Red Cross or equivalent organization
  • At least 16 years of age (as required by NY State law)
  • Previous lifeguarding experience preferred but not required for entry-level positions
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong swimming skills and physical stamina
  • Excellent observation and decision-making skills
  • Ability to remain alert and attentive throughout assigned shifts
  • Knowledge of water safety principles and emergency procedures
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Capacity to remain calm and effective during emergency situations

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while maintaining alertness
  • Strength to perform water rescues and assist guests in distress
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds
  • Vision correctable to 20/20 to observe entire swimming areas
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and temperatures

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Primary work environment includes indoor and outdoor pool areas
  • Exposure to pool chemicals and various weather conditions
  • Regular work schedule including weekends, holidays, and evenings
  • Seasonal fluctuations in scheduling based on resort occupancy
  • May require rotation between different aquatic facilities

COMPENSATION

  • Pay Range: $17.00-$20.00 per hour based on experience and certifications
  • Seasonal full-time and part-time positions available
