Machinist / Manual Lathe Operator
Shift: 1st Shift
Pay: $19-29 per hour based on experience

Job Purpose
A Manual Machinist is responsible for a variety of machine‐specific functions—from setting‐up equipment, loading materials and operating machinery, to monitoring and optimizing efficiency, maintaining machines and performing quality checks. A machinist will typically have the knowledge and ability to operate and maintain several machines.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates various machines as part of the production process to produce parts for the locomotive industry in accordance with AAR, customer specifications, company guidelines and checklists. Perform all duties and responsibilities in compliance with PR safety policies.
  • Operate manual machines including horizontal mills, engine lathes, and manual grinders to produce locomotive motor parts and axles.
  • Use precision gauges and instruments such as micrometers to determine and follow customers specifications.
  • Maintain specifications by observing, drilling, grooving and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations, taking measurements, detecting malfunctions, troubleshooting processes.
  • Adjusting and reprogramming controls, sharpening and replacing worn tools, adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Operate overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities within time standards allowed.
Advanced Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain specifications by observing, drilling, grooving and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations, taking measurements, detecting malfunctions, troubleshooting processes, adjusting and reprogramming controls.
  • Sharpening and replacing worn tools, adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Troubleshoot and repair various machines.
Qualifications, Experience, Education
We are seeking candidates with varying levels of qualifications and experience for our open positions. We require a minimum 1-2 years of experience or a relevant technical degree.
 
Preferred Skills
  • Possess expertise and/or certification in Advanced Welding Techniques.
  • Hold Certification in Non‐Destructive Testing.
  • Possess high level of machining Aptitude.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
Essential and Physical Activities Functions
The position requires physical strength to lift 50lbs and stamina for working in tight spaces while installing or repairing machinery. Employees must stand for most of the day and frequently walk, squat, kneel, and climb. The role involves exposure to high noise levels and vibrations, necessitating the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and the ability to read schematics. The work environment varies between indoor and outdoor settings, with exposure to temperature extremes and weather elements, as well as oils and lubricants. Teamwork is essential to meet production goals, and strict adherence to safety policies is crucial due to the safety-sensitive nature of the job, which involves working near live tracks and heavy equipment.
