We are Generac, a leading energy technology company committed to powering a smarter world.
Over the 60 plus years of Generac’s history, we’ve been dedicated to energy innovation. From creating the home standby generator market category, to our current evolution into an energy technology solutions company, we continue to push new boundaries.
Overview
Generac is scaling advanced, mission‑critical power architectures to support the rapid global expansion of hyperscale and colocation data centres. As Principal Engineer – Data Centre BESS Applications, you will act as a senior technical authority responsible for defining, validating, and deploying large‑MW, inverter‑based power systems where uptime, fault tolerance, and predictable performance are non‑negotiable.
This role focuses on system‑level engineering for always‑on digital infrastructure, integrating battery energy storage systems (BESS), power electronics, generators, MV equipment, and plant‑level controls to meet the stringent availability and operational requirements of hyperscalers and colo providers. You will shape reference architectures, guide customer‑specific deployments, and influence Generac’s technical strategy in the mission‑critical power market. This position may be based remotely within the US or Canada.
Responsibilities
Own the system‑level architecture, modelling, testing, and validation of large‑MW power solutions for hyperscale and colocation data‑centre applications
Serve as the technical authority for mission‑critical deployments, translating customer requirements for uptime, redundancy, and scalability into robust, deployable designs
Lead engineering execution for site‑specific data‑centre power systems, including redundancy concepts (e.g., N+1 / N+2), operating modes, and transitions between grid‑connected and islanded operation
Drive integrated system testing and validation of inverter‑based and generator‑based power systems under realistic data‑centre load and operating conditions
Evaluate and apply emerging technologies to improve availability, efficiency, and controllability of hyperscale and colo power infrastructures
Partner cross‑functionally with engineering, operations, sourcing, quality, service, and marketing to ensure solutions are scalable, manufacturable, serviceable, and aligned to customer expectations
Act as a trusted technical advisor to internal teams and external stakeholders, including customers, EPCs, utilities, and technology partners
Establish technical direction and mentor engineers, elevating system‑level thinking across power electronics, controls, and integrated plant design
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or a related discipline
Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in power generation, particularly in electronics and/or controls
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a closely related discipline
Direct experience supporting hyperscale or colocation data‑centre projects, mission‑critical facilities, or large‑scale inverter‑based power systems
Strong background in power electronics, inverter‑based resources, and system‑level power architecture design
Experience performing detailed system studies using EMT or power‑system simulation tools (e.g., PSCAD, PSS®E)
Working knowledge of industry standards and grid‑interconnection requirements relevant to data centres, including IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, NERC, FERC, and regional utility / ISO frameworks
Experience working with or alongside hyperscalers, colo providers, EPCs, or mission‑critical infrastructure partners
Proven ability to operate as a principal‑level technical leader, balancing deep technical analysis with deployment risk, customer impact, and business outcomes
