Overview

The Tank (Erection) Fitter/Tacker is responsible for field erecting, fitting, welding, grinding, and inspecting new steel storage tanks, vessels, and structures and making repairs to existing steel storage tanks, vessels, and structures.  This position is a Skilled Craft role.  The role directly reports to the Superintendent and routinely interacts with Erection Crews and Supervisors.


Responsibilities

  • Pass Pre-employment drug & alcohol screen
  • Unload fabricated steel products and tools from trucks or rail cars.
  • Operate electric and pneumatic power tools such as grinders, wire brushes, and chipping guns. Perform basic and preventative maintenance functions on power equipment.
  • Use hand tools such as shovels, brooms, scrapers, hand brushes, files etc.
  • Hook-on or move material around the field site by hand or with the assistance of a forklift or crane.
  • Align, fit, and tack steel shapes together utilizing temporary erection gear, fit-up (pry) bars, and sledgehammers.
  • Erect and dismantle temporary scaffolding used in steel plate construction.
  • Set up, break down, and rig lifting equipment such as mobile cranes and fixed derricks.
  • Set-up and use oxy-fuel or plasma burning equipment to cut or trim plate and structural steel.
  • Perform welding operations to join the steel parts together in accordance with approved for construction welding procedures using SMAW, FCAW and SAW processes.
  • Inspect, set up, use, break down’ and rig equipment such as aerial work platforms (spider buggies), elevated work platforms, and staging.
  • Lay out and install tank accessories according to drawings and procedures.

Basic Carbon Steel SMAW Welding Qualification (Four Plate Test)

o   Tank Bottom/Lapped Plate – layout and fit

o   Tank fittings – layout and fit

o   Tank shell plate – erect and fit

o   Weld seam grinding

o   Basic Knowledge of Construction Manuals

o   Compression bar

o   Shell stiffener

o   Wind girder

o   Top Angle

o   Engineering drawings – read and understand

o   Roof installation - Roof type to be filled by Evaluator, as applicable

o   Specialized tank activities - Air Raise / Hydrotest / Seal / Pneumatic, etc.

o   Tank Builders scaffold erection and use

o   Sphere shell plate – erect and fit

o   Crane hand signal skills

o   Ability to understand all type rigging tools

o   Able to read Operation Manuals / Load chart

o   Able to calculate the weight of the load

o   Maintaining the rigging tools in good working safe condition

o   Perform periodic inspection / Color coding all Rigging gear

o   Ability to select the correct rigging gear for the lift / Sling Termination

o   Knows how to do basic load calculations

o   Knows how to inspect lifting & safety tools / equipment

o   Knows how to organize work - follow given instructions

·         Ability to read a standard measuring tape

·         Communication Skills: Ability to effectively verbally communicate directions from craft supervisors and respond to questions from managers and fellow workers.

·         Mathematical skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

·         Access elevated work platforms and scaffolds through the use of ladders, stairways, or other designated access ways.

·         Climb structures utilizing appropriate fall protection and available handholds and footholds.

·         Work with precise limits or standards of accuracy.

·         Compare and see differences in the size, shape and form of lines, figures, and objects.

·         Understand verbal instructions and written posted notices.

·         Comply with all written and verbally communicated safety rules and procedures.

·         Perform general labor on construction sites.

·         Work in confined spaces where respirators and fresh air equipment are utilized.

·         Maintain and use personal protective equipment.

·         Practice good housekeeping to maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work area.

·         Perform a variety of duties, which may often change.

·         Able to understand verbal instructions and written posted notices.

·         Capable of learning to read and understand basic drawings.

·         Able to visually inspect personal work activities.

·         Able to pass required safety exams
