Description

The Drexel Way:

We don’t just sell lumber; we Supply. Happiness. Drexel is Team Member-owned and community-driven. With six retail hubs and three manufacturing plants across Wisconsin, we’ve been a Top Workplace every year since 2011. Why? Because we hire for heart and train for skill. When you join Team Blue, you aren't just a team member - you’re an owner.

The Mission:

As a Commodity Buyer, your primary objective is to be the analytical engine behind our raw material flow and support strategic procurement decisions. You are responsible for monitoring commodity markets, evaluating reliable supply partners, and managing routine purchasing loops to secure essential raw materials at the best possible price. As the foundational support of the procurement team, you ensure that our commitment to the builder is executed flawlessly by maintaining material availability, protecting profit margins, and keeping manufacturing schedules running smoothly.

Defining the Role:
  • Market Intelligence & Purchase Planning: Monitor commodity markets and global economic trends to provide analytical research that supports proactive, cost-effective purchasing decisions.
  • Demand & Inventory Alignment: Analyze internal manufacturing schedules, current inventory levels, and business goals to pace raw material purchases, prevent excess carrying costs, and avoid shortages.
  • Strategic Sourcing & Supplier Evaluation: Identify, cultivate, and evaluate potential suppliers to build reliable supply streams while monitoring vendor quality and availability against production benchmarks.
  • Bidding, Negotiation & Commercial Support: Participate in competitive bidding cycles and contract negotiations to secure optimal pricing, protect profit margins, and mitigate profit leakage.
  • Regulatory & Administrative Compliance: Exercise sound administrative discipline to ensure every purchase order, transaction, and delivery complies with corporate standards and legal regulations.
  • Operational & Material Availability: Serve as the foundational procurement support to protect the business from raw material shortages, ensuring operational teams have what they need to run smoothly.
  • Supplier Quality & Performance Tracking: Assist with gathering data for formal supplier scorecards to hold vendors accountable to quality specifications, compliance rules, and delivery timelines.
What Success Looks Like:

Performance is measured by your direct impact on our material availability, raw material cost control, and supply chain reliability:

  • Purchase Price Variance (PPV): Tracking the effectiveness of purchasing decisions against market baselines and budget targets to maximize profitability.
  • Material Availability / Stockout Rate: Ensuring raw materials are successfully procured to support 100% of manufacturing schedules without operational downtime.
  • Supplier Quality & Compliance Rating: Measuring the percentage of inbound shipments meeting established quality specifications and regulatory standards.
  • Inventory Turn Optimization: Aligning lead times and purchase execution to prevent excess raw material carrying costs while protecting supply integrity.
The Drexel Advantage:

The Wealth-Builder (Ownership)

  • ESOP Shares: We don’t just work here; we own the place. You’ll earn a real stake in the company’s success.
  • Profit Sharing: When Drexel wins, our team wins.
  • 401k: A solid foundation for your long-term retirement goals.
