Reporting to the VP, Consumer Lending, you’ll independently underwrite complex direct and indirect consumer loans, balancing loan growth with sound credit risk management, fraud prevention, and regulatory compliance. You’ll also serve as a go-to resource for other underwriters and lending partners, helping promote consistent, high-quality lending decisions across the Credit Union.
Â
What You'll Do
- Independently underwrite complex direct and indirect consumer loan applications by analyzing credit reports, income, financial documentation, collateral, capacity, and other risk factors.
- Make credit decisions within assigned lending authority and provide recommendations to management for applications exceeding established limits.
- Evaluate loan structure and overall credit risk while balancing member needs, portfolio quality, and production objectives.
- Review applications and supporting documentation for accuracy, completeness, and potential fraud indicators, taking appropriate action when concerns arise.
- Provide timely and professional guidance to members, dealers, branches, and internal lending teams regarding credit decisions, requirements, loan structures, and underwriting questions.
- Ensure adverse action notices and other required documentation are accurate, timely, and compliant with applicable requirements.
- Apply applicable federal and state consumer lending regulations, including BSA, FCRA, Fair Lending, ECOA, FACTA, TILA, and the Military Lending Act.
- Coach and support less experienced underwriters by providing guidance on credit analysis, loan structure, decisioning, and risk management.
- Partner with Loan Operations to resolve funding issues and support efficient loan closing and funding processes.
- Assist with dealer reviews, portfolio analysis, reporting, and analysis of trends and opportunities that support consumer lending performance.
- Stay current on consumer lending practices, market trends, regulatory requirements, and industry developments through dealer visits, training, and professional development.
- Identify opportunities to improve underwriting processes, technology, member experience, and risk controls.
Â
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of consumer, indirect, or related lending experience.
- Advanced experience reviewing credit bureau reports with strong knowledge of consumer credit, credit risk, and loan structuring.
- Demonstrated ability to independently make sound credit decisions within established lending authority.
- Strong knowledge of consumer lending regulations, fair lending requirements, and risk management practices.
- Experience with consumer lending and/or loan origination systems preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly explain credit decisions and requirements.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work occasional weekends and holidays based on business needs.
