The Thompson & Lichtner Co., Inc. is seeking an experienced Structural Steel / Welding Inspector to join our team on a part-time, full-time, or on-call basis. This position offers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of commercial, institutional, industrial, and infrastructure projects throughout New England, including some of the region’s most prominent facilities.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in welding, structural steel construction, and inspection practices, with the ability to independently perform field inspections and prepare accurate reports.

Responsibilities
  • Perform field inspections of structural steel fabrication and erection, welded connections, bolted connections, and reinforcing steel installation.
  • Verify compliance with contract documents, approved shop drawings, welding procedures, project specifications, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Review Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualification Records (WPQ), when required.
  • Inspect reinforcing steel placement, spacing, lap splices, concrete cover, supports, and embedments prior to concrete placement.
  • Read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, welding symbols, and project specifications.
  • Document inspection activities, maintain accurate field notes, and prepare clear and timely inspection reports.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, fabricators, engineers, and project representatives regarding inspection findings.
  • Follow company safety procedures and OSHA requirements while working independently in the field.
Qualifications
  • Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with other recognized welding inspection certifications or extensive structural steel/welding inspection experience will also be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of welding processes, structural steel fabrication, and welding inspection practices.
  • Familiarity with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel and applicable construction standards.
  • Experience with reinforcing steel inspection is highly desirable.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, welding symbols, specifications, and engineering details.
  • Experience reviewing WPS, PQR, and welder qualification documentation is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to prepare detailed field reports and maintain accurate inspection records.
  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces, climb ladders, access elevated work areas, and perform inspections at heights.
  • Ability to work independently and manage assigned inspections.
General Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Technical education, welding background, or additional certifications are preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work effectively with project teams.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to pass CORI/background screening and any project-required drug testing.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Appropriate safety attire required. ANSI-compliant work boots are required. Hard hat, safety vest, and safety glasses will be provided.
  • Must have a personal cell phone.
