Position Summary

The New Birth of Freedom Council seeks a passionate leader to expand access to Scouting for youth in the City of York, Pennsylvania. This field-based position leads Urban Scouting programs by recruiting and developing staff, building strong community partnerships, engaging families, and delivering safe, high-quality experiences that help young people grow. Scouting experience is welcome but not required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead quality Scouting programs, advancement, camping, outdoor experiences, and special events.
  • Maintain program quality through regular site visits and staff coaching.
  • Recruit youth and expand programs through schools and community partnerships.
  • Build relationships with families, schools, churches, housing communities, and community organizations.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, coach, and recognize Program Specialists.
  • Manage budgets, supplies, transportation, registrations, records, and grant reporting.
  • Monitor participation, retention, and program outcomes and recommend improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with Safeguarding Youth policies and Council standards.
  • Serve as staff advisor to the Urban Scouting Committee.
  • Represent the Council professionally throughout the community.


Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to helping young people succeed.
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills.
  • Age 21+, valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Flexible schedule including some evenings/weekends.
  • Experience in education, recreation, youth development, or community programs preferred; Scouting experience helpful but not required.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to obtain required clearances and Scouting membership.


Working Conditions

This field-based position requires regular travel throughout the City of York and periodic travel to Council camps, activities, and other locations. Most Urban Scouting programs are held after school. The position requires flexibility for occasional evening and weekend responsibilities related to community events, camping experiences, special activities, and other program needs.


The position requires the ability to lift, carry, and transport program supplies and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and to participate in outdoor and camping activities.

Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $40,000 annually plus a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, a 403(b) retirement plan, paid vacation, and holidays.
