Position Summary

The Procurement Manager – Strategic Commodities is responsible for leading the strategic sourcing, negotiation, and procurement of key raw materials and components critical to the manufacturing of building products (e.g., resins, chemicals, films, packaging, asphalt, etc.). This role drives year-over-year (YoY) cost savings that outperform market indices and industry competitors, while ensuring uninterrupted supply, consistent quality, and effective risk mitigation.

The position partners closely with R&D, Operations, Engineering, and Innovation teams to identify cost optimization opportunities, develop new materials and sources of supply, and support product performance and manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Sourcing & Cost Leadership

  • Lead sourcing strategies and negotiations for core building product commodities (e.g., polymers, asphalt, films, additives, minerals, etc.)
  • Deliver YoY cost savings that outperform commodity markets, indices, and key building products competitors
  • Utilize commodity indices (e.g., CMA, ICIS, RISI, etc.) to inform pricing models, contract structures, and negotiation strategies
  • Secure favorable supply agreements, including long-term contracts, index-based pricing, and volume leverage agreements
  • Develop and execute category strategies aligned with manufacturing, margin, and growth objectives

Supplier Management & Risk Mitigation

  • Manage a strategic portfolio of suppliers using a procurement matrix (e.g., Kraljic framework) aligned to business criticality and supply risk
  • Develop dual/multiple sourcing strategies to ensure continuity of supply for critical materials
  • Monitor and mitigate supplier risks including capacity constraints, raw material shortages, geopolitical exposure, and financial stability
  • Lead supplier performance management across cost, quality, delivery, and responsiveness metrics
  • Resolve supplier-related issues impacting cost, product quality, or production schedules
  • Conduct regular supplier business reviews and drive continuous improvement initiatives

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Value Engineering

  • Partner with R&D, Engineering, and Operations to identify and execute cost savings and value engineering projects (e.g., material substitutions, product redesign, process improvements)
  • Collaborate with Innovation teams to identify, qualify, and onboard new raw materials and alternative sources of supply
  • Support new product development and commercialization by ensuring cost-competitive and scalable supply solutions
  • Participate in make-vs-buy and should-cost analyses for materials and components

Operational Procurement & Plant Support

  • Oversee procurement execution across manufacturing plants to ensure alignment with production schedules and customer demand
  • Mentor and include plant buyers in cost savings projects in smaller commodity categories.
  • Ensure adherence to inventory policies, including working capital, safety stock levels, and service targets
  • Partner with plant leadership and planning teams to optimize procurement, inventory turnover, and material availability
  • Drive consistency in procurement processes, supplier utilization, and contract compliance across plants

Market Intelligence & Commodity Management

  • Monitor global and regional markets for key building materials and inputs, including cost drivers such as energy, transportation, and feedstocks
  • Integrate market intelligence into budgeting, forecasting, and sourcing strategies
  • Track and report savings performance relative to market movements and industry benchmarks
  • Anticipate supply disruptions and develop proactive mitigation strategies

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, Engineering, or related field (MBA preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years of procurement/sourcing experience, preferably within manufacturing or building products industries.
  • Experience sourcing raw materials such as Polymers, Asphalt, Films, Paper, Chemicals, or other industrial inputs
  • Proven track record of delivering YoY cost savings that exceed market performance
  • Strong experience negotiating complex contracts, including index-based and multi-year agreements
