Description of Work

Position serves as Engineering Technician III for Division 8 Traffic Services. Duties include preparation and administration of various purchase order contracts, maintaining an aggressive safety program for the Traffic Services Units, preparing draft traffic control plans, and assisting with collecting data for traffic speed studies. This position will respond to the concerns of citizens and other governmental departments in a timely manner, assist in performing incident management activities for Division 8, and assist in all aspects of special-event traffic control when required. This position will be responsible for administering the TODS program for Division 8 Traffic Services.

Additional expectations include experience in conducting routine inspections for compliance involving purchase order contracts, communicating with contractors, general public, and other government agencies, experience in the use of computer equipment and software such as Microsoft Office, SAP, MMS, and reading/interpreting roadway construction, pavement marking, traffic signal, and signing plans. Employee hired into this position is expected to program, deploy, and download electronic traffic data collectors and program and deploy variable message boards. Employee in this position will be expected to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. Work may be subject to outside environmental conditions such as noise and hazards from vehicles and construction machinery and responding to emergency situations including nights, weekends, and holidays. Employee may be required to work special events. Other duties/responsibilities will be assigned when necessary to support additional goals and objectives of the unit. Safety Toes Shoes Required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC11 $45,431 - $79,504

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience analyzing engineering concepts to solve complex problems

  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and produce engineering plans and specifications

  • Experience with NCDOT design guidelines and engineering software applications is essential

  • Knowledge of both maintenance and construction operations within NCDOT is preferred because this position will assist with various projects of broad scope

  • Skill in use of survey equipment and skill in the use of office equipment such as calculators and personal computers

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
