English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher/Coordinator
Reports To: Principal

Salary:  $77,000.00 per year

Position Summary
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher/Coordinator provides high-quality English language instruction to multilingual learners while coordinating the school's ESL program to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations. The position includes direct student instruction, collaboration with teachers, oversight of language acquisition services, and communication with families.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction

  • Provide direct ESL instruction to English Learners (ELs) using research-based instructional strategies.
  • Develop lesson plans aligned with Pennsylvania Academic Standards and WIDA English Language Development Standards.
  • Differentiate instruction based on students' English proficiency levels.
  • Support students in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • Utilize instructional technology to enhance language acquisition.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.

Program Coordination

  • Coordinate the school's ESL program in compliance with Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and federal Title III requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records for all English Learners.
  • Coordinate student identification, screening, placement, monitoring, and exit procedures.
  • Administer or coordinate WIDA Screener assessments.
  • Coordinate annual ACCESS for ELLs testing.
  • Ensure timely completion of required state reporting.
  • Monitor exited students for the required monitoring period.

Collaboration

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to support language development across content areas.
  • Participate in MTSS, Student Assistance Team (SAT), and IEP meetings as appropriate.
  • Assist teachers with instructional accommodations and modifications.
  • Provide coaching and professional development regarding best practices for multilingual learners.

Family Engagement

  • Build positive relationships with multilingual families.
  • Coordinate translation and interpretation services when needed.
  • Assist families in understanding school programs and available resources.
  • Conduct parent meetings regarding language services and student progress.

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Pennsylvania Department of Education regulations
    • Title III requirements
    • Civil Rights requirements regarding English Learners
    • ESSA requirements
  • Maintain confidential student records.
  • Assist during state audits and compliance monitoring visits.

Assessment

  • Analyze student assessment data.
  • Use assessment results to drive instructional decisions.
  • Prepare reports regarding student progress.
  • Coordinate language proficiency testing.

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field
  • Valid Pennsylvania teaching certification
  • ESL Program Specialist Certification or eligibility
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders

Preferred

  • Master's Degree
  • Three or more years of ESL teaching experience
  • Experience with WIDA standards and assessments
  • Experience in urban or culturally diverse school settings
  • Bilingual proficiency (Spanish preferred, but not required)
