POSITION SUMMARY

The Technical Writer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving technical documentation that supports manufacturing engineering, production operations, quality, and other cross-functional teams. This position works closely with Manufacturing Engineers, Engineering, Quality, Operations, and other subject matter experts to translate complex technical information into clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation.

The Technical Writer will create and maintain manufacturing documentation, work instructions, standard operating procedures, process documentation, technical manuals, and other controlled documents used to support safe, efficient, and consistent manufacturing operations. This role requires strong technical writing skills, attention to detail, the ability to understand complex manufacturing processes, and the ability to effectively collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES 

  • Create clear and concise work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), manufacturing procedures, process guides, technical manuals, and other production documentation.
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineers and subject matter experts to gather, interpret, and document technical information.
  • Translate complex engineering and manufacturing concepts into documentation that is clear and accessible to production personnel and other end users.
  • Observe manufacturing processes and work directly with production and engineering personnel to ensure documentation accurately reflects current practices.
  • Review existing documentation and identify opportunities to improve clarity, consistency, accuracy, usability, and standardization.
  • Ensure technical documentation follows established company standards, templates, formatting requirements, and document control procedures.
  • Coordinate document reviews and approvals with appropriate engineering, manufacturing, quality, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain document revisions and ensure obsolete documentation is appropriately controlled and removed from use.
  • Support the development and implementation of standardized documentation practices across manufacturing operations.
  • Incorporate engineering changes, process improvements, equipment modifications, and other updates into applicable documentation.
  • Assist with the development of visual work instructions, illustrations, diagrams, photographs, and other supporting materials when appropriate.
  • Research and validate technical information to ensure documentation is accurate, complete, and consistent with engineering and manufacturing requirements.
  • Collaborate with Quality and Manufacturing Engineering to support compliance with applicable quality systems and documentation requirements.
  • Support audits and continuous improvement initiatives by providing accurate and current manufacturing documentation.
  • Identify documentation gaps and proactively recommend improvements to support operational efficiency, quality, safety, and training.
  • Maintain organized electronic documentation and ensure information is readily accessible to appropriate users.
  • Participate in manufacturing engineering and cross-functional projects as needed.
  • All other duties assigned.

REQUIREMENTS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES)

  • Develop, write, revise, and maintain technical documentation supporting manufacturing processes, equipment, products, and engineering activities.
  • Create work instructions, SOPs, manufacturing procedures, process guides, technical manuals, and other production documentation.
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, production personnel, and subject matter experts to gather and document technical information.
  • Translate complex engineering and manufacturing concepts into clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation.
  • Observe manufacturing processes and collaborate with production and engineering teams to ensure documentation reflects current practices.
  • Review and improve existing documentation for accuracy, clarity, consistency, usability, and standardization.
  • Ensure documentation complies with company standards, templates, formatting requirements, quality systems, and document control procedures.
  • Manage document reviews, approvals, revisions, and obsolete documentation while maintaining organized and accessible electronic records.
  • Incorporate engineering changes, process improvements, equipment modifications, and visual materials into applicable documentation.
  • Identify documentation gaps and support audits, training, continuous improvement, operational efficiency, safety, and cross-functional manufacturing engineering projects.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (required levels) 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, Communications, Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in technical writing, engineering documentation, manufacturing documentation, or a related technical environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and communicate complex technical information.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple documentation projects and priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
