POSITION SUMMARY

The Warehouse Yard Lead provides day-to-day leadership and operational support for team members working in the company’s laydown yards. This position is responsible for coordinating the safe and accurate movement, storage, loading, and unloading of materials entering and leaving the yards. The Warehouse Yard Lead serves as the primary point of contact for yard employees and works closely with warehouse, logistics, production, and transportation teams to maintain efficient operations, accurate inventory, and a safe, organized work environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES 

  • Provide daily work direction and operational support to yard team members.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employees working in the laydown yards.
  • Assign work, communicate daily priorities, and monitor completion of assigned tasks.
  • Coordinate and participate in the loading and unloading of inbound and outbound materials.
  • Train and instruct team members on proper material-handling, loading, unloading, and storage procedures.
  • Maintain accountability for all materials received into, stored within, and shipped from the yards.
  • Verify inbound and outbound shipments for material type, quantity, condition, and destination.
  • Ensure shipping, receiving, and inventory paperwork is complete, accurate, and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Confirm that outbound loads are accurate, properly secured, and prepared in accordance with company requirements.
  • Perform and coordinate regular inventory cycle counts of materials stored in the yards.
  • Investigate and communicate inventory discrepancies, damaged materials, and shipment issues.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and clearly designated material-storage areas.
  • Ensure materials are stored safely and in a manner that supports efficient retrieval and movement.
  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment by enforcing company safety policies and proper equipment-operating procedures.
  • Conduct routine yard inspections and promptly address safety hazards, housekeeping concerns, and material-storage issues.
  • Coordinate with internal departments and external drivers or carriers regarding material deliveries and pickups.
  • Escalate employee, safety, inventory, equipment, or operational concerns to the appropriate supervisor or manager.
  • Assist with onboarding and training new yard employees.
  • This position provides day-to-day work direction, training, and operational guidance to yard employees. The Warehouse Yard Lead is expected to model safe work practices, reinforce performance expectations, and promptly communicate operational or employee concerns to management.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES) 

  • Ability to read and verify shipping documents, packing lists, bills of lading, and inventory records.
  • Basic computer skills and experience using inventory or warehouse-management systems preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively direct employees and coordinate multiple operational priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly regarding inventory and shipment accuracy.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (required levels) 

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous warehouse, shipping and receiving, material-handling, or yard operations experience required.
  • Previous lead, team coordination, or informal supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience operating forklifts or other material-handling equipment preferred.
