Position Summary:
The Utility / Multi-Skilled Production Operator is a highly skilled and versatile production employee who has demonstrated proficiency across multiple production assembly positions and processes. This position serves as a flexible resource to maintain production continuity by providing coverage for employee absences, including vacation, Arizona Sick Leave (PSL), FMLA, and other planned or unplanned absences.
The Utility Operator is expected to possess extensive knowledge of production assembly processes, procedures, quality requirements, safety standards, and applicable SOPs. The individual must be capable of moving between different positions, processes, and work areas with minimal direction while maintaining established expectations for safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency.
This position requires a high degree of flexibility, dependability, technical knowledge, and the ability to quickly adapt to changing production needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain demonstrated proficiency in multiple production positions, processes, and procedures.
- Provide coverage for employees who are absent due to vacation, PSL, FMLA, leaves of absence, vacancies, or other staffing needs.
- Move between production positions, workstations, or processes throughout the shift, week, or as operational needs require.
- Perform assigned production duties with minimal additional training or supervision.
- Follow established SOPs, work instructions, quality standards, and safety procedures for each assigned position.
- Maintain expected productivity and quality standards when providing coverage in different positions.
- Quickly adapt to changes in production schedules, staffing levels, priorities, and work assignments.
- Identify and communicate production, quality, safety, or process concerns to appropriate leadership.
- Assist with training or demonstrating established work processes to new or less-experienced employees when requested.
- Support production leadership with other operational needs consistent with the employee's demonstrated skills and training.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in a fast-paced manufacturing or production assembly environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in multiple production positions and processes.
- Extensive working knowledge of applicable production assembly processes, procedures, SOPs, quality requirements, and safety standards.
- Ability to transition between different production positions with minimal instruction or retraining.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and comprehend work instructions, SOPs, production documentation, and safety information in English.
- Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure.
- Ability to perform basic math, including addition, subtraction, and calculations involving fractions.
- Strong attendance, dependability, and demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Ability and willingness to adjust assignments based on daily production and staffing needs.
- Previous experience performing multiple jobs within the applicable production department or assembly line.
- Advanced knowledge of production processes, equipment, quality requirements, and troubleshooting.
- Previous experience assisting with employee training or on-the-job instruction.
- Demonstrated history of meeting safety, quality, productivity, attendance, and performance expectations.
- Ability to recognize process deviations and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrates dependable attendance, punctuality, and reliability.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Physical demands may include standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, climbing, pushing/pulling, forward bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, balancing, manipulating, trunk rotation, handling, gripping, talking, and hearing.
- Must be able to lift to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to perform the physical requirements associated with the various production positions for which the Utility Operator is trained and qualified.
- Required use of safety glasses, steel-toe footwear, cut-resistant gloves, hearing protection, and other PPE as assigned per plant department and location.
