Sonic Summary

info
  • This demanding and rewarding job requires a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent hands-on hardware experience, along with at least one internship or co-op focused on real-world mechanical systems.
  • Candidates should have strong hands-on CAD and analysis experience, proficiency with standard 3D CAD modeling tools, and a solid understanding of core mechanical engineering fundamentals.
  • The position involves owning parts of mechanical subsystems, designing components that balance performance and manufacturability, and collaborating across teams to ensure integration with the engine system.
  • The base salary range for this position is $87,000 - $117,000 per year, with actual salaries varying based on factors such as location, experience, and performance.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents to comply with ITAR regulations, and the internships require 100% onsite work at Boom's headquarters in Centennial, CO.

This job is demanding and rewarding.

This job isn't for everyone. You're the right person if:

  • You've already done something real — built hardware, led a competition team (Formula SAE, Baja, Rocketry, Robotics), or taken on engineering work in an internship that went well beyond what most early-career engineers get to touch.
  • You're genuinely excited by complex mechanical systems and love following a problem from whiteboard to hardware.
  • You'd rather own something and figure it out than wait for a perfect set of instructions.
  • CAD, analysis, the machine shop, and the test cell are where you want to spend your time.
  • You care about doing the work well — not just finishing it.

What You'll Do

  • Own parts of mechanical subsystems — fuel, lube, cooling, and other balance-of-plant systems — from initial concept through analysis, drawing release, and integration into the full engine system.
  • Design components and assemblies that balance performance, reliability, manufacturability, and testability, making real engineering tradeoffs on hardware that actually gets built.
  • Plan and support assembly processes, working closely with manufacturing engineers on the floor to make sure your designs can be built, assembled, and serviced.
  • Design and run component and system-level tests — instrument the hardware, collect data, interpret results, and use what you learn to make better engineering decisions faster.
  • Collaborate across propulsion, electrical, and manufacturing teams to make sure your subsystems integrate cleanly with the rest of the engine.

You Probably Have

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent hands-on hardware experience.
  • At least one internship or co-op where you designed, analyzed, or built real-world mechanical systems.
  • Hands-on CAD and analysis experience – proficiency with standard 3D CAD modeling (e.g., NX, SolidWorks, CATIA) and structural/thermal FEA tools.
  • A rock-solid grasp of core mechanical engineering fundamentals – statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, machine design, and fluid mechanics/thermodynamics.
  • A track record of finishing hard things, inside school and outside of it.

Engineers who want to spend their first year doing work that actually matters should apply.
