JOB STATEMENT: Maintenance Mechanic 3 is an advanced-level maintenance position responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, and improving winery processing equipment, facility systems, utilities, refrigeration, electrical systems, controls, and other critical plant equipment. The position supports safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the winery by diagnosing complex equipment problems, performing major repairs and equipment modifications, and identifying opportunities to improve equipment reliability and performance.

The Mechanic 3 applies advanced mechanical, electrical, controls, refrigeration, HVAC/R, and utility knowledge across the winery. This includes processing and production equipment, material-handling systems, facility infrastructure, industrial refrigeration, HVAC/R, electrical systems, instrumentation and controls, and critical utilities such as compressed air, water, boilers, steam, SO₂, nitrogen, fire protection, and wastewater systems.

The Mechanic 3 works with minimal supervision on complex maintenance activities and serves as a senior technical resource for the Maintenance Department. The position provides technical guidance and mentoring to Mechanic 1 and Mechanic 2 employees, supports preventive and predictive maintenance and reliability initiatives, and recognizes when additional support from the Chief Mechanic, contractors, vendors, engineering, or Maintenance leadership is required

Essential Duties:

Operate, maintain, diagnose, and repair all ammonia refrigeration, SO2, boiler, and utility systems at an advanced level, serving as the primary technical resource for these systems within the maintenance department.
Perform advanced troubleshooting, repair, inspection, installation, and preventive and predictive maintenance on winery processing equipment, production systems, conveyors, pumps, motors, gearboxes, drives, material-handling equipment, and related machinery.
Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, controls, instrumentation, refrigeration, HVAC/R, and utility system problems and determine appropriate corrective actions.
Troubleshoot electrical systems from 24V through 480V, including motors, starters, contactors, breakers, fuses, VFDs, sensors, controls, and related components within applicable training and authorization.
Troubleshoot, repair and maintain PLCs, instrumentation, sensors, control devices, and other industrial automation systems.
Perform major equipment repairs, overhauls, installations, modifications, alignments, and equipment improvements.
Troubleshoot, repair and maintain industrial ammonia refrigeration, HVAC/R, compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, valves, controls, and related equipment.
Diagnose ammonia refrigeration system performance issues involving suction and discharge pressures, temperatures, refrigerant flow, oil management, system levels, condenser performance, evaporator performance, and related operating conditions.
Perform and support refrigeration system pump-downs, startup and shutdown procedures, defrost operations, equipment changeovers, and other system operating activities within applicable training and authorization.
Provide advanced technical support for critical winery utility systems, including compressed air, wells and water systems, boilers and steam, SO₂, nitrogen, fire protection, wastewater, pumps, valves, piping, and associated controls.
Monitor equipment and system operating conditions and identify opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency, safety, and performance.
Support equipment startups, shutdowns, commissioning, major repairs, and equipment modification projects.
Assist in developing and improving preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for critical equipment and systems.
Perform root-cause troubleshooting and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurring failures, downtime, and production interruptions.
Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, P&IDs, refrigeration diagrams, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and hands-on support to Mechanic 1 and Mechanic 2 employees.
Assist with training and development of maintenance personnel in mechanical, electrical, controls, refrigeration, utility, and equipment maintenance skills.
Identify conditions requiring specialized expertise and communicate recommendations to the Chief Mechanic, Maintenance Supervisor, vendors, contractors, engineering, or other resources.
Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation in the CMMS and follow established maintenance procedures.
Support a culture of safety, reliability, continuous improvement, teamwork, and accountability.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Experience:

Minimum of 5 years of industrial maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of trade school, apprenticeship, education, and experience.
Demonstrated advanced mechanical maintenance and troubleshooting experience in a manufacturing, food processing, winery, or similar industrial environment.
Demonstrated experience troubleshooting industrial electrical systems and controls, including motors, motor controls, VFDs, PLCs, sensors, and instrumentation.
Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and maintaining complex winery processing and production equipment.
Significant experience with industrial refrigeration, ammonia refrigeration, HVAC/R, and critical utility systems preferred.
Demonstrated industrial refrigeration experience, with working knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems, system operation, troubleshooting, and safe maintenance practices.
Experience with ammonia refrigeration system startup/shutdown, pump-down procedures, defrost systems, oil management, leak response, and operating parameter monitoring preferred.
Experience with compressed air, water systems, pumps, boilers, steam, SO₂, nitrogen, fire protection, wastewater, or similar industrial utility systems preferred.
Experience performing major equipment repairs, overhauls, installations, modifications, and corrective maintenance.
Advanced welding, fabrication, pipe fitting, equipment installation, and equipment modification experience preferred.
Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring, or training to other maintenance personnel preferred.
High school diploma or GED required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Technical school, apprenticeship, or industry certification in industrial maintenance, electrical, HVAC/R, refrigeration, controls, or a related trade is a plus.
EPA HVAC/R and/or RETA certification is a plus.
Valid driver's license required.
Must successfully complete a background check and drug screening in accordance with company policy.

Advanced mechanical maintenance and troubleshooting of industrial processing and production equipment.
Pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, drives, bearings, mechanical power transmission, and related equipment.
Industrial electrical systems, motor controls, starters, contactors, VFDs, PLCs, instrumentation, sensors, and electronic controls.
Winery processing and material-handling equipment and associated mechanical and electrical systems.
Industrial ammonia refrigeration systems, HVAC/R equipment, refrigeration controls, and related components.
Critical winery utility systems, including compressed air, water, boilers, steam, SO₂, nitrogen, fire protection, and wastewater.
Electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, P&IDs, refrigeration diagrams, equipment manuals, and technical specifications.
Welding, fabrication, pipe fitting, equipment installation, and modification techniques.
Preventive and predictive maintenance practices and equipment reliability principles.
Root-cause analysis and advanced troubleshooting methods.
Lockout/Tagout procedures, safe work practices, and applicable safety requirements.
Applicable electrical codes, company procedures, and industry best practices.

Ability to:

Troubleshoot complex winery processing, mechanical, electrical, controls, refrigeration, HVAC/R, facility, and utility systems.
Diagnose failures and identify root causes rather than simply correcting symptoms.
Safely perform advanced maintenance activities within applicable training, certification, and authorization requirements.
Analyze equipment operating conditions and determine appropriate repairs, adjustments, modifications, or replacement requirements.
Troubleshoot ammonia refrigeration systems by evaluating system pressures, temperatures, levels, controls, refrigerant flow, compressor operation, condenser and evaporator performance, and other operating conditions.
Safely perform authorized maintenance and operating activities on ammonia refrigeration systems and recognize conditions requiring immediate escalation or specialized refrigeration support.
Interpret technical drawings, schematics, P&IDs, manuals, and control documentation.
Make sound technical decisions while balancing safety, reliability, production, quality, and cost.
Perform major repairs, equipment overhauls, installations, modifications, and troubleshooting with minimal supervision.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Mechanic 1 and Mechanic 2 employees.
Communicate technical information effectively with maintenance, production, leadership, vendors, contractors, and other departments.
Recognize when specialized expertise, engineering, contractors, vendors, or additional resources are required.
Recommend improvements that increase equipment reliability, safety, efficiency, maintainability, and production performance.
Adapt to changing equipment, technology, processes, and maintenance requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds.
Frequent forward reaching, bending, kneeling, standing, and walking.
Ability to remain on feet for extended periods.
Occasional stair climbing.
Ability to work at various heights and in awkward positions.
Ability to perform physical maintenance tasks for extended periods.
Ability to work in industrial environments with exposure to machinery, noise, water, chemicals, heat, cold, and other environmental conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Frequently work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Exposure to moderate high noise levels.
May be exposed to dust, chemicals, water, steam, machinery, moving equipment, and other industrial conditions.
May be required to work in confined spaces, elevated areas, or other challenging maintenance environments when properly trained and authorized.
May be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, or on-call assignments based on business and production needs

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: When working in production or maintenance areas, the employee is required to wear appropriate PPE, including:

Safety glasses with side shields.
High-visibility safety vest or appropriate high-visibility clothing.
Hearing protection is required.
Head protection is required.
Proper safety footwear.
Additional PPE as required for the specific task or work environment
