About the role

Capitol Companies is seeking a dependable, service-oriented Maintenance Technician / Assistant Building Engineer to support the maintenance, repair, and day-to-day operation of a portfolio of commercial and/or residential properties in Northern Virginia.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, organized, safety-conscious, and able to diagnose and resolve a broad range of building maintenance issues. This role is responsible for completing routine and corrective maintenance, supporting small improvement projects, responding to service requests, and helping ensure all properties remain safe, functional, and well maintained. The position requires reliable transportation and the ability to travel between assigned properties.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine preventive and corrective maintenance across assigned properties.

• Diagnose and complete repairs involving painting and touch-up work; drywall repair and patching; basic HVAC maintenance and troubleshooting; plumbing repairs, including fixtures, leaks, drains, and minor replacements; and electrical troubleshooting, lighting repairs, outlets, switches, and minor component replacement.

• Respond promptly and professionally to tenants, residents, and property-management service requests.

• Inspect building systems, common areas, mechanical spaces, and exterior areas to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns.

• Assist with the maintenance and repair of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building automation systems.

• Support small construction, renovation, and property-improvement projects from planning through completion.

• Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors when specialized repairs or services are required.

• Maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, maintenance issues, and follow-up needs.

• Help maintain an organized inventory of tools, supplies, and replacement parts.

• Follow all company policies, safety procedures, building codes, and applicable regulations.

• Maintain a clean, professional work environment and represent Capitol Companies positively at all properties.

• Be available for occasional weekend work and urgent maintenance needs, as business operations require.

Who you are

• Someone with at least one year of maintenance, mechanical, facilities, or building-engineering experience.

• Experienced with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or building automation systems.

• Possesses familiarity with preventive-maintenance programs, work-order systems, and vendor coordination.

• Has obtained trade certifications or coursework in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or related fields.

Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• General mechanical aptitude and practical experience performing building maintenance and repair work.

• Ability to troubleshoot common HVAC, plumbing, electrical, drywall, and painting issues.

• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks across different properties.

• Customer-service mindset and professional communication skills.

• Reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally between properties.

• Authorization to work in the United States.

• Ability to safely lift, carry, climb, bend, and perform physically active maintenance work.
