All About the Role:

The Senior Payroll Specialist serves as a subject matter expert and operational leader responsible for the end‑to‑end execution of payroll across the organization. This role ensures accurate and timely payroll processing, interprets and applies federal and state wage and hour regulations, and leads complex payroll activities requiring advanced expertise. The Senior Payroll Specialist provides guidance to team members, supports issue resolution, drives continuous improvement, and partners cross‑functionally to uphold strong internal controls and service delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Payroll Processing & Compliance
  • Lead and perform end‑to‑end payroll processing, including reconciliations, garnishment administration, GL postings, and weekly audits.
  • Ensure payroll accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes affecting payroll and implement required updates to procedures.
  • Research and resolve complex payroll inquiries and support cross‑functional teams in problem resolution.
  • Team Leadership & Development
  • Promote strong teamwork and collaboration to meet service levels, deadlines, and team goals.
  • Provide advanced guidance, coaching, and support to payroll team members as they resolve complex or escalated issues.
  • Lead or facilitate training for new, revised, and existing payroll processes to ensure consistent execution.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for payroll issues requiring subject matter expertise.
  • Process Optimization & Systems Support
  • Review, monitor, and enhance payroll processes and internal controls to support accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Support planning and execution activities for the future transition to Workday Payroll, including planning, design, documentation, and process alignment.
  • Assist with special projects, audits, and additional responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of multi‑state payroll experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities.
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with professionalism.

Minimum Qualifications – Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation.
  • Experience with Workday Payroll.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of payroll principles, multi‑state taxation, and labor regulations.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel.
  • Workday Payroll experience and familiarity with payroll system functionality.
  • Excellent organizational capability with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional partners.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Demonstrated initiative and self‑motivation.
