Methods Machine Tools was established in 1958 with three employees and a handful of refurbished machines. Since then, the company has become one of the largest privately owned machine tool importers in North America.


Methods designs and implements custom machining setups, including machine tool selection, automation integration, and turnkey automation cells. The corporate campus in Sudbury, Mass., comprises a showroom/technical center, which contains automation, applications, and a full range of cutting-edge machines. Methods has more than 300 employees, nine technology centers, one high precision machining center, and has installed more than 45,000 machines throughout North America.


Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Design Engineer to join our team in the CNC machine industry. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing innovative mechanical designs, optimizing existing machine components, and working cross-functionally to bring high-precision CNC machinery from concept to production.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and systems for CNC machines.
  • Create and modify detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Inventor).
  • Design cost-effective, time-efficient after-sales solutions that maximize value while meeting tight budgets and deadlines.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, electrical, and controls engineering teams to ensure cohesive product integration.
  • Perform design calculations, tolerance analysis, and FEA simulations to validate design integrity.
  • Conduct design reviews and update documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Investigate design issues, recommend solutions, and implement changes for improved functionality or manufacturability.
  • Support prototyping, testing, and validation of new or modified machine components.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and customer specifications.
  • Maintain documentation including BOMs, ECNs, and revision control within PLM systems.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably within the CNC or precision machinery industry.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software and engineering drawing standards (GD&T knowledge a plus).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, pneumatics, materials, and manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, welding, assembly).
  • Experience with CNC machines, tooling design, or automation systems is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with PLM/ERP systems and version control practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with CAM software or CNC programming principles.
  • Knowledge of servo systems, linear guides, ball screws, or spindle design.
  • Hands-on experience with machine assembly or shop-floor environments.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None


Travel Requirements: 

  • Approximately 25% of time


Physical Requirements: 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
