Summary
Balfour Beatty is seeking a Preconstruction Intern to join the Carolinas team in Charlotte. The Preconstruction Intern supports the preconstruction and estimating team by assisting with early project planning, cost estimating, and bid preparation activities. This role provides exposure to the full preconstruction lifecycle—from reviewing drawings to supporting subcontractor bidding—while developing foundational construction, estimating, and coordination skills.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills. This individual will be highly organized, able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, and eager to learn by asking questions and collaborating with estimators, project managers, and field teams.
Essential Functions
Estimating & Cost Support
- Assist with quantity takeoffs from project drawings and specifications.
- Support cost estimating efforts by organizing and analyzing project data.
- Assist with reviewing estimate details to ensure accuracy and completeness.Â
Subcontractor & Bid Support
- Assist with soliciting subcontractor bids and tracking responses.
- Help organize bid documents and maintain bid logs.
- Support review of subcontractor proposals to ensure scope coverage.
Scope & Documentation ReviewÂ
- Review drawings, specifications, and scope sheets to understand project requirements.
- Assist in developing estimate clarifications and assumptions.
- Support preparation of preconstruction deliverables and reports.Â
Project Coordination & MeetingsÂ
- Attend and participate in site tours, pre-bid, post-bid, and owner/architect/contractor (OAC) meetings.
- Take meeting notes and track follow-up items.Â
General Support & LearningÂ
- Assist with administrative and coordination tasks for the preconstruction team.
- Maintain organized project files and documentation.
- Learn and utilize estimating software and internal systems.
- Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and field teams.Â
 Learning Objectives / Development FocusÂ
- Understand the preconstruction lifecycle from concept through bid submission.
- Develop skills in quantity takeoffs, cost analysis, and scope review.
- Gain exposure to subcontractor coordination and bidding processes.

 Minimum RequirementsÂ
- Currently pursuing a degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of construction concepts through coursework or academic experience.
- Ability to visit active construction sites (personal protective equipment required when applicable).
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and work on a computer.
