Position Summary

At New Birth Midwifery & Wellness Center, we believe every family deserves compassionate, individualized, and safe care throughout their pregnancy and birth journey. We are committed to developing excellent midwives through mentorship, experience, and intentional professional growth. The CMS role is designed for a newly credentialed midwife who is actively progressing toward full independent credentialing while serving as an integral member of the clinical team. This position combines scheduled call coverage with clinical triage, client communication, and ongoing professional development. The CMS provides compassionate support to clients, serves as the primary contact for non-urgent clinical concerns, assists with continuity of care, and participates in a structured pathway toward full independent practice within New Birth Midwifery.


Core Responsibilities

Clinical Call Coverage

  • Participate in fourteen (14) scheduled twelve-hour call birth assist shifts during each four-week scheduling period.
  • Remain available during assigned call shifts to provide support for laboring clients and birth center operations as directed.
  • Respond appropriately to births and urgent clinical needs occurring during scheduled call shifts.
  • Collaborate with supervising and student midwives to ensure safe and seamless client care.
  • Lead 8 hours of patient care per week in a 4-week rotation under the supervision of a licensed midwife.

Clinical Triage & Client Communication

  • Serve as the primary responder for Extension 1 clinical calls Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Return voicemails and enter call logs as appropriate.
  • Provide initial assessment and triage of non-urgent pregnancy, postpartum, newborn, and gynecologic concerns under the supervision of a licensed midwife.
  • Escalate concerns appropriately to the on-call midwife when indicated.
  • Manage and respond to client portal communications seven (7) days per week. Check portals 2x daily M-F; 1x daily Sat/Sun. 
  • Ensure timely, compassionate, and clinically appropriate communication with clients and families.
  • Assist clients in understanding recommendations, follow-up plans, and when higher levels of care may be needed.

Care Coordination

  • Facilitate communication between clients and members of the clinical team.
  • Support continuity of care by ensuring client concerns are documented and communicated appropriately.
  • Assist with coordination of referrals, consultations, laboratory follow-up, and other clinical care needs as assigned.
  • Participate in case review and team discussions regarding client care.

Professional Development

  • Actively participate in a structured pathway toward full independent credentialing and practice readiness.
  • Participate in mentorship meetings, case reviews, emergency skills training, and educational opportunities.
  • Demonstrate ongoing growth in clinical judgment, communication, documentation, and independent decision-making.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Complete documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain compliance with birth center policies, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and required practice events.
  • Assist with special projects and clinical initiatives as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Finished with all PUS births (if a student at NBM).
  • Current NRP and BLS certification.
  • Commitment to obtaining full independent credentialing through completion of MEAC Bridge requirements in a timely manner (if applicable). 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and seek consultation appropriately.
  • Ability to work independently while remaining closely connected to the clinical team.
  • Commitment to relationship-based, client-centered midwifery care.
