Job Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:


Under limited supervision, the Specialty Team Leader is a registered nurse who provides ongoing clinical operations support for a designated specialty service within the Operating Room setting. The Specialty Team Leader works collaboratively with physicians and their offices, the perioperative leadership, other clinicians, and ancillary departments to accomplish the essential functions of the job. They assume ownership for the specialty and the service they provide, as well as, serve as a resource to other team members and staff regarding that particular specialty. 


  • Provides oversight and coordination of staff and equipment resources to meet the needs of the daily schedule. Works collaboratively with Sterile Processing and other ancillary departments regarding product evaluation and vendors.
  • Anticipates the needs of the block schedule and works collaboratively with the physician, physician’s office and the OR Clinical Coordinator to provide uninterrupted service. Evaluates room turnover, identifies trends and works collaboratively to resolve issues impacting the efficiency of the schedule.
  • Develops and/or approves clinical resource materials to be shared with staff members who may be expected to provide care in lieu of the specialty team members. Responsible for the creation and maintenance of preference cards for the designated specialty.
  •  Advances clinical practice in the unit and beyond through translation of evidence into practice.
  • Serves as clinical expert and professional resource for the nurses beyond the unit level; mentors and coaches other nurses to advance in their development.
  •  Provides nursing leadership in the development and implementation of patient population/organizational level evidence based protocols/procedures.
  •  Develops CNI, CNII, and SCNIs to effectively function in unit based roles.
  •  Advances excellence in collaboration with interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care on the patient’s continuum; models independent advocacy for patient/family needs.
  •  Enhances practice consistent with division/organizational operations to ensure safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, patient centered care.

The employee in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the age of the patients served. He/she must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status, to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the necessary care as described in the department's policies and procedures.

Required Skills and Experience

Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.

Current BLS certification required.

Must meet all unit specific certification requirements (ACLS, PALS).

Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting. Minimum of 1 year experience in specialty preferred.

Meets licensing requirements to practice registered nursing in the State of Maryland. Must meet all applicable federal, state, and local professional requirements.
