A Day in the Life of a Behavioral Health Technician


Behavioral Health Technicians provide basic patient care for Cheyenne Regional's inpatient Behavioral Health Unit. This position collaborates with clinical staff to ensure patient and family safety and support while maintaining compliance with legal and regulatory rules.

Here is What You Will Be Doing:

  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates individual patient care within the scope of license.
  • Provides direct patient care, including but not limited to, Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as assistance with bathing, eating, dressing, and walking patients.
  • Obtains vital signs and performs adult bedside blood glucose monitoring when appropriate and provides oxygen delivery as needed.
  • Transports patients and equipment as needed within the facility.
  • Monitors patient activities and condition via direct observation or unit camera, documents patient care and condition and reports any variances to the RN, collaborating to address needs of physicians, coworkers, management, and other departments. May provide 1:1 observation for patient safety as assigned.
  • Answers and relays patient calls, departmental communications, clerical tasks, data entry, reporting, and ordering supplies and other unit support as needed.
  • Performs electrocardiogram testing (EKG), wound cleansing and bandaging, specimen collection, and point of care testing within scope of license.
  • Responds to traumas and codes to assist with de-escalation, restraint placement, and performing compressions, ensuring patient and staff safety.
  • Changes bed linens and cleans and stocks supplies for patient rooms and department as necessary.
  • Participates in shift report to receive hand-off information from primary nursing staff, including reason(s) for requiring additional observation, appropriate interventions, ADLs for the shift, and any other pertinent information relevant to the care of the patient.

Here is What You Need:

  • Licenses (must meet one of the following):
  • Wyoming Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license from Wyoming State Board of Nursing
  • National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification
  • Ninety (90) days: CPI within 90 days from start date

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working in a mental health facility
