Job Description Summary

The Phlebotomy Technician will perform perform venipuncture and EKG testing for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Phlebotomy Technician provides required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively while adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

Job Description

The Phlebotomy Technician will:

  • Perform venipuncture/capillary and EKG testing

  • Process specimen collection /and prepare for transport to external processing facility.

  • Utilize electronic medical record and laboratory information systems to audit pending/cancelled tests to streamline communication of results to the health care team. Escalating issues to leadership.

  • Provide excellent customer service and phone etiquette

  • Adhere to lab Standard Operating Procedure regarding  potentially biohazardous material and sharps.

  • Stock and monitor inventory of laboratory supplies and notify management of shortages.

  • Perform ECG exams per physician orders

  • Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Manager, Laboratory

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Completion of an accredited medical phlebotomy program or equivalent program

  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.

  • One year of experience performing venipuncture, capillary sticks and ECG testing preferred.

  • Computer literacy required.  Familiarity with electronic medical records and lab information systems, Epic and Cerner preferred.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required to interact with hospital staff, patients, visitors, coworkers, leadership and other internal and external customers

  • Ability to operate independently and collaborate effectively in a team setting.

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
