About the Role:
Ammons Transportation Service Inc is looking for a skilled and dependable CDL School Bus & Fleet Maintenance Mechanic to join our team in Chicago, IL. This is a hands-on role where you'll keep our fleet running safely and efficiently — making a real difference in the lives of students and riders every day. Responsibilities:
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on school buses and fleet vehicles, including oil changes, brake inspections, and fluid checks
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on diesel-powered vehicles
- Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure DOT and safety compliance
- Repair or replace worn or defective parts including engines, transmissions, and suspension components
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and service records for all fleet vehicles
- Respond to road calls and perform emergency roadside repairs as needed
- Collaborate with dispatch and operations to minimize vehicle downtime
Requirements:
- Valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) required
- 2+ years of experience in diesel engine repair and fleet maintenanceÂ
- Experience with school buses or commercial vehicles strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of DOT regulations and vehicle safety standards
- Ability to diagnose issues using computerized diagnostic tools and equipment
- Must supply own basic hand tools
- Strong attention to detail, reliability, and a safety-first mindset
