This position will support all aspects of construction projects for roadways, bridges, utilities, sewers, facilities, etc.; perform oversight and inspection of contractor activities; interpret plans and specifications and ensure work is performed in accordance with them; document field activities; measure and calculate quantities of work completed; observe materials testing and ensure proper materials are incorporated into the work.    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES - GENERAL •    Possesses foundational engineering concepts •    Acquires intermediate knowledge and skills through mentored experience •    Evaluates and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform assigned tasks as part of a broader assignment  •    Performs work assignments of moderate complexity. Contributes to specific objectives and outcomes •    Receives instruction on specific objectives and direction on possible solutions to unconventional or complex problems •    Works as part of a team and coordinates work with others •    Typically receives moderate supervision on most aspects of assignments and a general review of all aspects of work •    Possesses proficient oral and written communication skills •    Interacts primarily with internal project team members. May be required to communicate with clients or other stakeholders •    Adhere to project deadlines and keep the task manager informed of any difficulties encountered on assignments •    Performs review of own work before submitting to the next level for review   ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES – SPECIFIC •    Understands and interprets project plans and specifications •    Performs daily inspection and/or oversight of contractor’s activities to ensure all work is performed in accordance with the project plans and specifications •    Documents field activities and submits daily reports •    Measures and calculates quantities of completed work •    Observes materials testing at a construction site •    Ensures proper materials are incorporated into the work •    Reports task related information to the Project Lead •    May assist the Project Lead with other duties as assigned   COMPETENCIES •    Knowledge of mathematics and its application to engineering computations •    Can work effectively as a team player •    Ability to build constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation, and mutual respect for our stakeholders •    Show insight into the root causes of problems. Master's degree preferred.  Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) or EIT preferred. Job Classification: Exempt (Salaried) Report to: Project Engineer – Team Lead Experience: Typically 3+ years required Communication Skills: Proficient verbal and written communication skills. Technical Skills: Intermediate engineering skills. Ability to read and interpret plans and mentally visualize them.  Have the foresight to recognize potential construction issues in the field and bring them to the attention of appropriate parties for resolution. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and Bluebeam. Intermediate background in and knowledge of local government agency standards and databases, specifically, IDOT, CDOT, Bluebeam, and the Tollway preferred. Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A Physical Demands: Must be able to sit, walk, stand, reach with hands and arms, stoop or kneel, climb, or balance, talk, or hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects tools or control. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds on occasion. Working Environment: This job may require long periods of standing or walking in the field and include exposure to all types of outside weather conditions, varying noise levels, and hazards associated with construction. Wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment is required while performing work in the field. The employee may also be exposed to a general office environment, requiring long periods of sitting at a computer in ambient inside temperature, lighting and noise level. Due to the collaborative nature of this position, the work will need to be performed in the field or office, typically during normal business hours. Travel is required; must possess a valid license.  Continuing Education: Complete state-required competency. Attend job-related seminars and workshops.
