Haymarket Center is the largest and most comprehensive provider of treatment for substance use and mental health conditions in Chicago and the only treatment provider in the area to be designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Look-Alike for homeless individuals. 

 

Founded in 1975, Haymarket Center reaches over 12,000 patients annually and is a values-based nonprofit which prioritizes access to care and health equity across more than 30 specialized programs and a $40 million operating budget. Clients come from across Illinois, but primarily from Chicago's most highly-stressed communities. Care is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, regardless of ability to pay.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, Haymarket Center seeks a Senior Director of Finance to lead the organization's financial planning, analysis, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, reimbursement analysis, and grant financial management. The Senior Director serves as a strategic partner to the Chief Financial Officer and executive leadership by providing financial insight, identifying opportunities, and supporting data-driven decision-making. 

 

The role supports financial operations across behavioral health, substance use disorder (SUD), Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Illinois Department of Human Services Division of Mental Health (DMH), Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), and government-funded programs. 

 

This is a hands-on leadership position. The Senior Director leads the finance team while remaining actively involved in financial analysis, executive reporting, budgeting, forecasting, reimbursement, and strategic initiatives. 

 

This is a fully in-person role primarily based at Haymarket Center’s Chicago West Loop facility. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Financial Planning & Analysis 

  • Develop annual operating budgets, departmental budgets, grant budgets, and financial forecasts. 
  • Build financial models and scenario analyses to support strategic planning and executive decision-making. 
  • Analyze financial and operational performance, identify trends, explain variances, and recommend corrective actions. 
  • Prepare and present monthly financial reports, forecasts, dashboards, and recommendations to executive leadership. 
  • Support new programs, service lines, and organizational initiatives through financial analysis and implementation. 
 

Grant Financial Management 

  • Lead the financial management of more than 50 federal, state, county, city, and private foundation grants.
  • Develop grant budgets for new funding opportunities and competitive grant applications.
  • Monitor grant expenditures, spending trajectories, and revenue projections to ensure timely utilization of funds.
  • Prepare grant financial reports, budget revisions, reimbursement requests, and financial close-out documentation. 
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements, cost principles, and reporting deadlines. 
 

Financial Reporting 

  • Develop executive dashboards, KPI scorecards, and financial performance reports.
  • Analyze revenue, expenses, productivity, census, payer mix, reimbursement, and program performance.
  • Monitor cash flow, revenue trends, budget performance, and organizational financial health. 
 

Revenue Cycle Financial Oversight

  • Partner with Revenue Cycle leadership to monitor reimbursement performance across Medicaid, Medicare, Commercial, FQHC, DMH, and CCBHC programs.
  • Analyze claims, denials, collections, payer performance, accounts receivable, and reimbursement trends. 
  • Provide financial oversight of outsourced billing operations and collaborate with internal Revenue Cycle leadership to improve financial performance. 
  • Identify opportunities to improve reimbursement, revenue capture, and operational efficiency. 
 

Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls 

  • Coordinate and oversee the annual Single Audit.
  • Lead financial activities related to federal, state, county, and city audits. 
  • Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and financial analyses.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with grant, contractual, and regulatory requirements. 
  • Serve as the primary finance liaison for external auditors and funding agencies. 
 

Leadership & Process Improvement 

  • Lead, mentor, and develop 2 finance staff members while maintaining an active role in daily financial operations.
  • Establish department priorities and ensure timely completion of deliverables.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial reporting, automate processes, and strengthen internal controls. 
  • Collaborate with Revenue Cycle, Clinical Operations, Grants, Compliance, Information Technology, and Executive Leadership staff to improve organizational performance.

Requirements 

  • Bachelor's degree 
  • Degree, certification, or credential in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive finance experience
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience
  • Healthcare finance experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, grant financial management, reimbursement analysis, and executive financial reporting 
  • Technical proficiency with:
    • Microsoft Excel - Advanced-level proficiency including advanced formulas, PivotTables, financial modeling, dashboard development, and analysis of large, complex datasets. 
    • Microsoft Power BI - Advanced experience developing executive dashboards, KPI scorecards, interactive reports, and data visualizations using multiple data sources. 
    • Microsoft PowerPoint - Ability to develop polished executive presentations that clearly communicate financial performance, trends, and strategic recommendations. 
 

The following pieces of experience are preferred but not required:

  • Experience with behavioral health, FQHC, DMH, CCBHC, nonprofit healthcare, and government-funded programs strongly preferred.
  • Technical proficiency with: Microsoft Access, SQL, Sage Intacct, NextGen EHR/Practice Management, and Paylocity
