With general oversight from Lead of Pre-Analytic and the Supervisor of Laboratory Operations and in collaboration with the laboratory operations team, the Specimen Accessioner will be responsible for receipt, tracking,
and entering data into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)/Operation metrics, ensuring chain of custody. The Specimen Accessioner position includes functions such as matching patient information, scanning documents, and interdepartmental communication. These activities will be performed under CLIA/CAP regulations and will directly impact human health and thus must meet the highest possible standards for quality and integrity.
Key Responsibilities
This role is responsible for the efficient and quality execution of specimen accessioning and LIMS/Operation metrics data entry for the Laboratory. This includes working with the Lead of Pre-Analytic and the Supervisor of Laboratory Operations to maintain all documentation required for operation under CLIA/CAP certification, including review and minor editing of standard operation procedures as necessary and use of sample tracking systems in accordance with the SOPs.
- Receive incoming specimens to ensure proper transport and specimen integrity
- Verify specimen information such as patient identification and test orders
- Accurately and efficiently enter patient data and specimen information into the LIMS/operation metrics
- Label specimens accurately according to the SOPs
- Perform data entry pertaining to laboratory operations and quality
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory area
- Assist with resolving accessioning issues to include, but not limited to, test requisition discrepancies, missing information, etc.
- Communicate with Customer Service to escalate and resolve any specimen accessioning related issues
- Adhere to and uphold all applicable federal and state compliance regulations as well as Company’s compliance policies and procedures, accrediting agency policies and procedures
- Additional tasks as delegated by the Lead of Pre-Analytic and the Supervisor of Laboratory Operations
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Associate's degree
- 1+ years of experience equivalent to an Accessioning Technician preferred
Required Knowledge
- Medical background preferred which includes medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory
- Must be able to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Basic computer skills and proficiency in data entry
