Description

Part-Time (~20 hrs/week) · Chico Animal Hospital · Chico, CA

$23–28/hr DOE · Flexible daytime schedule · Long-term role

Chico Animal Hospital runs on documented protocols — how we answer phones, prep for surgery, handle prescriptions, maintain equipment. We recently migrated our entire knowledge base (500+ pages) into BookStack, our self-hosted documentation platform, and standardized its formatting. Now we need the part a machine can't do: a person to verify it, improve it, and keep it alive.

  • Own our ~514-page knowledge base: verify accuracy by interviewing and shadowing the staff who actually do the work, then fix what's outdated and write what's missing
  • Enhance documentation with photos, screenshots, and annotated images you capture yourself
  • Work a prioritized queue we've already built for you — pages flagged for review, proposed formatting improvements, and content gaps — with clear monthly targets
  • Run our review cycle so no protocol goes stale, and report simple monthly metrics
  • Own and evolve our documentation style guide — when formatting or structure isn't working for staff, you have the authority and a defined process to change it
  • Over time, build interactive staff training courses in Moodle (quizzes, onboarding modules) from the documentation you've refined
  • Excellent written communication — you can turn a rambling verbal explanation into a clear, step-by-step procedure anyone can follow on their first day
  • Strong self-direction — you'll get goals, a work queue, and access to staff, not daily supervision
  • Comfort learning software platforms (BookStack, Moodle, basic photo/screenshot annotation); prior experience with wikis, LMS platforms, or documentation tools is a plus
  • Comfortable working inside a busy animal hospital — observing procedures and asking questions without disrupting patient care
  • Veterinary, medical, or dental office experience is a plus but not required

How you'll be evaluated

Candidates who advance past a first interview complete a short paid work sample (~2 hours at the offered rate): rewriting a messy procedure and documenting a simple task from a video, with annotated images. We weigh this far more heavily than your resume.

Details

~20 hours/week, scheduled during business hours (roughly 8am–5pm, Mon–Fri; the exact schedule is flexible). On-site in Chico, CA. Long-term role with growth into training program development.

Requirements

  • Exceptional written English — you can turn a rambling verbal explanation into a clear, step-by-step procedure a first-day employee can follow (this is the core of the job and will be tested with a paid work sample)
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills — you catch errors, inconsistencies, and ambiguity in your own writing and others'
  • Proven self-direction — able to plan and execute work independently with goals and a queue, not daily supervision (~20 hrs/week largely unsupervised)
  • Comfortable interviewing people — able to ask questions, extract knowledge from busy staff, and observe procedures without disrupting patient care
  • Basic computer proficiency and demonstrated ability to learn new software platforms independently (we use BookStack for documentation and Moodle for training)
  • Comfortable taking and annotating photos/screenshots (arrows, callouts, cropping) using any common tool
  • Able to work on-site in Chico, CA during business hours (Mon–Fri, ~8am–5pm window; exact schedule flexible)
  • Comfortable working inside an active animal hospital environment (around animals, medical procedures, and occasional difficult situations)

Preferred (not required):

  • Experience with wikis, knowledge bases, CMS, or documentation platforms (BookStack, Confluence, Notion, SharePoint, MediaWiki, etc.)
  • Experience with learning management systems (Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard) or instructional design
  • Technical writing coursework, certification, or professional experience
  • Veterinary, medical, or dental office experience
  • Photography or basic image-editing experience
  • Experience establishing document standards, style guides, or review processes
