Xavier University is seeking a skilled Carpenter to join our Physical Plant team. This role plays a critical part in maintaining, repairing, and enhancing the university’s facilities to ensure a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Carpenter performs a wide range of construction and maintenance tasks from repairing doors and locks to fabricating custom fixtures and contributes directly to the preservation and continuous improvement of Xavier’s campus infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
• Construct, install, maintain, and repair wood and mixed-material structures including doors, floors, roofs, walls, and furnishings.
• Diagnose issues and complete repairs for cabinetry, furniture, ceiling tiles, windows, glass panes, and other campus assets.
• Assemble new furniture, install shelving and fixtures, and support campus requests for modifications and repairs.
• Interpret blueprints and work instructions; precisely measure, cut, shape, and join materials using hand and power tools, ensuring compliance with building codes and accuracy of workmanship.
• Perform preventive maintenance on structural elements including doors, windows, handrails, drywall, ceilings, stairs, and roofs.
• Utilize a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to document work, submit time records, and communicate with customers and supervisors.
• Collaborate with team members, contractors, and campus partners to support timely completion of work orders and campus projects.
Requirements:
• High school diploma or GED required
• 5–10 years of carpentry, building repair, or related experience
• Advanced skills in power tool and shop equipment operation
• Firm working knowledge of carpentry practices, construction techniques, and repair standards
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical manuals
• Strong problem-solving capability with independence of action
• Ability to communicate effectively and interact professionally with students, staff, and vendors
• Valid driver's license required
