Job Requirements:

• Associate's Degree Biological Science or related field of study (Required)

• 4 - 5 years Surgical Pathology Lab (Preferred) 

• 1 - 2 years Progressive leadership (Preferred)

Job Overview:

The Anatomic Pathology Team Lead is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the surgical pathology section, ensuring high-quality specimen processing, workflow efficiency, and compliance with regulatory standards. This role serves as a working lead, balancing hands-on technical responsibilities with team coordination, training and quality oversight. The Team Lead acts as a key liaison between staff, pathologists and leadership to support optimal patient care outcomes.

Job Responsibilities:

• Operational Leadership: - Coordinate and prioritize daily workflow within the surgical pathology department (grossing, cytology procedures, frozen microtomy, etc.) - Ensure timely and accurate specimen handling from accessioning through slide delivery. - Monitor turnaround times and proactively address workflow bottlenecks. - Assist with staffing assignments and coverage to meet workload demands. - Assisting with inventory ordering, storage and management. 

• Technical Expertise: - Perform gross examination of specimens (based on qualifications and scope). - Troubleshoot technical issues related to grossing, cytology procedures, staining and frozen microtomy. - Ensure proper specimen orientation, fixation, and processing protocols are followed. - Serve as a subject matter expert for complex or problematic cases. 

• Quality & Compliance: - Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditations standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission). - Monitor quality control and quality assurance metrics. - Participate in audits, inspections, and proficiency testing. - Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement corrective actions. 

• Team Leadership & Development: - Provide day-to-day guidance, support, and accountability for team members. - Train and onboard new staff; ensure competency assessments are completed. - Address performance concerns in collaboration with leadership. - Foster a positive, collaborative, and professional work environment 

• Communication & Collaboration: - Act as the primary point of contact for surgical pathology staff during the shift. - Communicate effectively with pathologists regarding specimen prioritization and issues. - Act as liaison between staff and leadership. - Partner with other departments (e.g., Histology, Cytology) to ensure continuity of workflow. - Escalate concerns appropriately to management.
