Our mission is to deliver essential services that promote the independence of seniors so they may remain in the comfort of their own homes. We are an official member of Meals on Wheels America, and our regional organization is one of the largest in the country. Every year, we reach nearly 10,000 seniors throughout 13 counties with our services. The Meals on Wheels Controller is a full-time, Monday - Friday days only position in which the Controller will work in the Finance Department and is responsible for all Accounting practices.  As business warrants, work schedule may be modified to meet deadlines.  Medical, vision and dental benefits available day one.  Ten paid holidays per year and paid time off accrual starts day one.     PRIMARY FUNCTION:  The Controller oversees the organization's day-to-day accounting operations and ensures the integrity of all financial reporting. This role provides hands-on financial leadership, supports strategic decision-making, and develops accounting staff to maintain the highest standards of accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. Success in this role requires strong analytical ability, exceptional attention to detail, and excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams, leadership, and external partners. TYPICAL WORK CONDITIONS:  Work is performed in the offices of our Finance Department.      ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Financial Leadership & Oversight Lead and manage all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, billing, general ledger, and account reconciliations. Supervise and mentor three accounting staff, fostering professional development and a culture of collaboration and accountability. Proactively identify operational, financial, and reporting risks and independently develop and implement corrective actions. Demonstrate initiative in resolving issues, eliminating bottlenecks, and driving department performance without requiring detailed direction. Financial Reporting & Analysis Lead timely month-end close procedures to support accurate monthly financial statements and quarterly reports for leadership and the Board of Directors. Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. Assist in providing analysis and insights to support data-driven decision-making. Budgeting & Forecasting Assist in developing and managing the annual operating and capital budgets. Support ongoing budget monitoring, variance analysis, and cash flow forecasting. Payroll Administration Oversee payroll processing to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance. Grant & Audit Support Assist in preparing financial data for grant applications, reporting, and compliance reviews. Assist with annual audits, tax filings, and adherence to all relevant nonprofit regulations, including Uniform Guidance. Policies & Internal Controls Develop, implement, and maintain sound financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and enhance operational efficiency. Ensure all accounting processes are documented and updated regularly. QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA required. Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting and management experience; nonprofit experience preferred. Prior supervisory experience with a history of developing staff. Strong knowledge of GAAP.  Familiarity with Uniform Guidance a plus. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience working with other Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Power Point, etc). Demonstrated ability to leverage technology to improve efficiency, strengthen controls, automate processes, and enhance reporting capabilities. Strong aptitude for learning, implementing and optimizing financial systems and emerging technologies. Experience with accounting software; Sage Intacct preferred. Experience with payroll processing software; Paycom preferred. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to compile, audit, analyze, and present complex financial information to all internal teams and outside partners.  Must be able to effectively collaborate with all levels of employees and outside vendors. Must demonstrate a proven track record of accountability, initiative, and ownership.  Successful candidates are self-directed leaders who proactively address challenges, follow through on commitments, meet deadlines, and drive results without close supervision. PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Work performed primarily in an office setting. Ability to sit, stand, bend, lift, and move during the workday. Ability to ascend/descend stairs. Must be able to handle the mental and emotional demands of the role and maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
