Location: Indianapolis, IN & Greensburg, IN

Reports To: Leadership Team

Status: Full-Time

Travel: 4 days/week (Indianapolis - North Side); 1 day/week (Greensburg); 2 -3 times/year travel to Cincinnati, OH for larger projects.

Position Overview

The Reading Group (TRG) is seeking a highly autonomous and proactive Building Engineer to oversee the upkeep and operational integrity of our commercial real estate portfolio. This is a mid-to-senior level career role designed for a multi-trade skilled professional who thrives in a remote, self-directed environment and does not require daily supervision.

As the primary steward of our Indianapolis and Greensburg assets, you will act as a motivated self-starter, managing your schedule to ensure our facilities remain in peak condition. You will be expected to work independently while maintaining clear, proactive communication with management regarding facility needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Autonomous Facility Oversight: Independently manage daily maintenance workflows across multiple sites, serving as the "eyes and ears" for management.
  • Preventative & Strategic Maintenance: Develop and execute long-term preventative maintenance schedules for all building systems to minimize reactive repairs.
  • System Diagnostics: Troubleshoot and manage complex HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems. While certifications are not mandatory, deep functional knowledge is required to perform high-quality repairs solo.
  • Structural Repairs: Execute construction-related tasks including wall installation/removal, ceiling tile replacement, carpentry, painting, and caulking.
  • Safety & Compliance: Conduct rigorous inspections of buildings and equipment; lead safety inspections (including fire life safety) to ensure 100% compliance with local codes.
  • Grounds Management: Oversee landscaping efforts, including the installation, trimming, and removal of surface plantings and general outdoor aesthetics.
  • Project Leadership: Lead minor demo and construction projects; periodically travel to our Cincinnati location to support larger-scale initiatives and capital improvements.
  • Vendor Management: Identify, engage, and oversee third party vendor work that falls outside, or in addition to, Building Engineer role and responsibilities. Ensuring that vendors perform work to company standards and expectations.
  • Communication: Provide regular, proactive updates to management on property status, potential risks, and task completion via established reporting channels.

Required Skills & Mindset

  • Experience: 7+ years of experience in commercial maintenance or construction (Experience managing multiple sites preferred).
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced "handyman" skill set with documented proficiency in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general construction.
  • Autonomy & Ethics: A proven track record of working solo without direct daily supervision. Must demonstrate high integrity, a strong work ethic, and motivation.
  • Proactive Problem Solving: Ability to identify a problem before it becomes an emergency and take the initiative to resolve it.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written skills; ability to "communicate up" effectively to leadership.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. regularly and work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Mobility: Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation for travel between Indianapolis, Greensburg, and Cincinnati.

Compensation, Support & Benefits

We offer a highly competitive package designed to support a long-term, tenured professional:

  • Wages: Highly competitive and negotiable based on experience.
  • Tool Provision: TRG provides all professional-grade tools and equipment required to perform the job effectively.
  • Monthly Reimbursements:
    • Mileage: Monthly reimbursement for all work-related travel (at the current IRS standard rate).
    • Cell Phone: Monthly stipend to cover professional communication costs.
    • Work Shoes: Up to $100 annual reimbursement for approved safety/work footwear.
  • Culture: A collaborative work environment built on the "TRG Way," emphasizing direct communication and mutual respect.
