Police Officer
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Xavier University Police Department is seeking applicants for a police officer position. This position involves protecting life and property, preventing/deterring crime, enforcing laws (i.e., state statutes, city ordinances), rules, and regulations per Xavier University policy. The successful candidate will utilize community oriented policing strategies to reduce crime and educate the University population in crime prevention, work with members of the surrounding communities and local law enforcement to identify and rectify issues which may reduce quality of life standards for the community at large, and assist members of the University as required beyond the scope of conventional law enforcement duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Patrols buildings and grounds on foot, golf cart, bicycle and in patrol vehicles. Preserve the peace, protection of life and property; prevent crime, enforce laws (i.e., state statues, city ordinances), rules and regulations per Xavier University Policy and Code of Student Conduct. Apprehends violators, files affidavits, serves warrants, issue citations, and detains violators as required for both the Xavier community as well as other police agencies.
2. Investigates complaints, criminal offenses and motor vehicle accidents. Renders written reports (i.e. daily activity log, offense/accident/injury and condition reports, etc.) Escorts money and receipts as needed by other departments of the university. Assist stranded motorists (jump starts, lock-outs etc.), provide room accesses, conduct safety escorts and coordinate services between other University departments, contractors and Xavier community members as needed.
3. Works with students, faculty and staff, members of the surrounding communities, and other law enforcement agencies to provide quality crime prevention and community oriented policing programs designed to educate the community in all areas of personal and campus safety. Support those initiatives through daily application of community oriented policing activities (walking through buildings, public relations, education programming, etc.)
4. Performs security at special events. Assists with traffic control and parking operations. Assists with fire-fighting and safety inspections. Aids and protects officials and visitors.
5. Performs other specialized duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or Shift Lieutenants based on training, experience and interest.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Associate’s degree preferred in Criminal Justice or related field
- 1-3 years of relevant experience
- Ohio peace officer state certification
- Valid driver’s license
- Certification in CPR, First Aid, AED
- Certification in firearms and shotguns/rifles, taser, ASP baton, and chemical sprays.
- NIMS compliant
