JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Theatre Department at Pomona College invites applications for a one-year, non-tenure track, Visiting Assistant Professor of Lighting Design. The individual holding the position is expected to teach 4 courses per academic year, including: Intro to Lighting Design, Intro to Technical Theatre, Lighting Technology, and Advanced Lighting Design, as well as design for one departmental show. A successful candidate would have experience in instructing students in new digital technologies and be abreast of current trends and practices within the field.  

This faculty member will also supervise independent studies and/or senior projects in design as the need arises. While there is no expectation of ongoing scholarship or professional work outside the Department, such activities are encouraged as long as the individual clearly understands the full-time nature of the position and the expectation of advising students and participating actively in the life of the Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The candidate must understand the goals of theatre education within the liberal arts mission of the College and embody these goals in their teaching. Pomona College, the founding member of the Claremont Colleges, is a highly selective liberal arts college attracting a diverse, national and international student body. QUALIFICATIONS:

Education--Required: M.F.A.  or equivalent experience is required

Teaching Experience--Preferred: Teaching experience at the college level and a significant body of professional work outside of academe are greatly preferred.

Please note: This position is not eligible for travel or moving expenses. Employment is contingent upon providing proof of the legal right to work in the United States as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 for the duration of the contract, July 1, 2026 until June 30, 2027. Salary is commensurate with years in rank and teaching experience.

REQUIREMENTS: The start date is effective July 1, 2026, with instruction beginning on Monday, August 31, 2026 for the fall semester and on Tuesday, January 19th, 2027 for the spring semester. After submitting proof of work authorization and completing onboarding, Visiting Assistant Professors are expected to prepare for their classes and attend the New Faculty Orientation, held in the weeks before classes start in the fall. This non-tenure-track position is instructional and does not require student advising, faculty service or participation in faculty governance.
