Description

The Director of Tax will provide strategic leadership and oversight of all tax-related activities within Huntington Community Impact Capital ("CIC"). This individual will lead the tax function supporting CIC's investment portfolio, including Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), Historic Tax Credits (HTC), New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC), and other tax-advantaged investments. The Director will oversee tax compliance, tax credit forecasting, tax planning, and tax-related risk management while serving as a trusted advisor to CIC senior management.

In addition to technical leadership, the Director will be responsible for developing and mentoring the CIC tax team, driving process improvements, strengthening internal controls, and ensuring CIC remains a market leader in tax credit investing.

The Director of Tax will report to the CIC Director of Tax Credit Syndications and will be primarily responsible for:

Tax Strategy and Leadership

  • Lead CIC's overall tax strategy related to tax credit investments and proprietary investment platforms.
  • Partner with CIC senior leadership to evaluate new products, investment structures, and strategic initiatives.
  • Provide expert guidance on federal and state tax matters impacting CIC investments and funds.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize the utilization of tax credits and other tax attributes across Huntington.
  • Advise CIC management on emerging tax legislation, industry developments, and regulatory changes.

Tax Compliance and Reporting

  • Oversee the review and analysis of partnership tax returns, K-1s, tax projections, and related reporting for CIC investments.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of all tax compliance obligations associated with direct, proprietary, and multi-investor funds.
  • Coordinate with Huntington's Corporate Tax Department to support annual tax planning, forecasting, and tax credit delivery strategies.
  • Maintain oversight of tax credit delivery schedules and compliance tracking.
  • Support responses to tax audits, external audits, internal audits, and regulatory examinations.

Technical Expertise and Risk Management

  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert for tax matters related to LIHTC, HTC, NMTC, and other tax credit programs.
  • Lead research and interpretation of complex tax issues impacting CIC's investment portfolio.
  • Review partnership agreements, operating agreements, loan documents, and transaction structures to identify tax implications and risks.
  • Establish and maintain policies, procedures, and controls designed to ensure tax compliance and mitigate tax risk.
  • Partner with Accounting Policy, Finance, Asset Management, and Legal teams on complex transactions and reporting matters.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop CIC's tax team, fostering a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and provide regular coaching and professional development opportunities.
  • Mentor team members on tax credit programs, partnership taxation, financial analysis, and transaction structuring.
  • Support succession planning, talent development, recruiting, and onboarding activities.
  • Promote cross-training and knowledge sharing across the CIC organization.
  • Build and maintain a high-performing team capable of supporting CIC's continued growth.

Process Improvement and Operational Excellence

  • Drive process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and consistency across CIC tax-related functions.
  • Develop reporting tools, dashboards, and controls to enhance management oversight.
  • Leverage technology and automation opportunities to improve tax reporting and compliance processes.
  • Establish best practices and scalable processes to support future growth of the investment portfolio.

Industry Representation

  • Represent Huntington and CIC at industry conferences, working groups, and policy discussions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external advisors, accounting firms, legal counsel, fund administrators, and industry organizations.
  • Contribute to industry leadership initiatives and advocate for policies that support community development investing.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field.
  • 10+ years of relevant tax experience.
  • 7+ years of experience with tax credit investments, including LIHTC, HTC, NMTC, or similar structures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA
  • Strong knowledge of partnership taxation and tax-oriented investment structures.
  • Experience managing tax compliance, tax planning, and tax reporting functions.
  • Prior people leadership experience, including supervision and development of professional staff.
  • Advanced expertise in LIHTC and other tax credit investment programs.
  • Experience with complex fund structures and institutional investment vehicles.
  • Strong understanding of tax accounting, financial reporting, and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated success building and leading high-performing teams.
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with senior executives and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Proven track record of process improvement and operational excellence.
  • Advanced Excel capabilities.
