Conformal Coating Operator
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Conformal Coating Operator to join our electronics manufacturing team. In this role, you will apply protective conformal coatings to printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), safeguarding them against moisture, dust, chemicals, and other environmental hazards. You will own the complete coating workflow-from precision masking and material preparation through manual spray application, curing, inspection, and rework-ensuring every assembly meets strict quality and reliability standards, including IPC-A-610, IPC-CC-830, and J-STD-001.
Core Responsibilities
- Surface Preparation & Masking Read and interpret engineering drawings, routing sheets, and work instructions to accurately mask components that must remain free of coating (connectors, test points, switches, etc.) using specialized tapes, boots, dots, and other approved masking materials.
- Coating Application Perform manual spray-gun applications and controlled brush applications to achieve consistent coverage and thickness across complex PCBA geometries.
- Material Mixing & Chemistry Safely handle, measure, and mix liquid conformal coating compounds-including acrylics, polyurethanes, silicones, and epoxies-to precise viscosity and mix-ratio specifications while following all safety and handling protocols.
- Curing Control Load and manage thermal curing ovens, strictly adhering to designated temperature profiles, dwell times, and cycle parameters to ensure proper cross-linking and adhesion.
- Quality Inspection Perform thorough visual and microscopic inspections under UV light to verify coating thickness, uniformity, coverage, and freedom from defects in accordance with IPC-A-610 (Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies), IPC-CC-830 (Qualification and Performance of Electrical Insulating Compound for Printed Wiring Assemblies), and J-STD-001 (Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies), as well as customer requirements.
- Rework & Touch-Up Skillfully remove excess coating, clear blocked holes or keep-out zones, and reapply material to correct voids, thin spots, bridging, or other anomalies while maintaining process integrity and compliance with applicable IPC standards.
- Equipment Maintenance & Inventory Control Disassemble, clean, and rebuild spray guns and fluid lines. Monitor chemical inventory using FIFO (First In, First Out) principles and Kanban systems to prevent shortages or expired material.
