Job Summary

The Shop Mechanic II performs skilled maintenance and repair work on company vehicles, machinery, and nursery equipment. This role is responsible for diagnosing mechanical issues, performing preventative maintenance, and completing intermediate to advanced repairs on fleet vehicles and operational equipment. The Shop Mechanic II works independently on many repair tasks and supports the Shop Mechanic Lead in maintaining safe and reliable equipment.

 

Essential Functions

  • Perform preventative maintenance and intermediate mechanical repairs on company vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues with trucks, tractors, trailers, and nursery equipment.
  • Repair and replace mechanical components including tires, belts, hoses, and hydraulic components.
  • Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, fluid replacement, and mechanical inspections.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records for company vehicles and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with required documentation for maintenance records including those required by DOT and CARB regulations when applicable.
  • Work with the Shop Mechanic Lead or Fleet Manager on larger repairs and maintenance planning.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
  • Ensure proper disposal of shop waste in compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Occasionally travel to nursery locations to diagnose or repair equipment.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • May assist with training or guiding Shop Mechanic I employees.
  • May assist other nursery departments with equipment support when needed.
  • Duties are subject to change at management’s discretion.

 

Experience and Other Requirements

Required

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with machinery, vehicles, or farm equipment.
  • Strong mechanical diagnostic and repair skills.
  • Ability to safely operate shop tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate repair and maintenance records.

 

Preferred

  • Experience working with agricultural or nursery equipment.
  • Experience maintaining fleet vehicles or diesel equipment.
  • Knowledge of DOT maintenance record requirements.

 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is performed primarily outdoors and within a mechanical shop environment.

 

Work conditions include exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, machinery noise, oils, grease, and shop chemicals.

 

Physical requirements include:

  • Standing or walking for extended periods
  • Climbing ladders and working around equipment
  • Stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling when performing repairs
  • Lifting up to 25 lbs. (75% of the time)
  • Team lifting up to 100 lbs. (25% of the time)
  • Use of hands for grasping tools and equipment
