Position Summary

The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) provides skilled occupational therapy services to patients in their homes under the direction and supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT). Services are delivered in accordance with physician orders, the established plan of care, agency policies, and applicable state and federal regulations.

This role supports patients in improving functional abilities, performing daily activities, and maintaining independence in the home setting.

Reporting Structure

This position reports to the supervising Occupational Therapist (OT) and designated clinical leadership. The OTA functions as part of the interdisciplinary care team and provides treatment only under the direction of the OT and within the established plan of care.

Scope of Practice

The OTA performs services within the scope of Florida OTA licensure, Medicare Conditions of Participation, physician orders, and agency policies. The OTA does not perform initial evaluations, develop therapy plans of care, or make independent clinical decisions outside the direction of the supervising OT.

Essential Job Functions

1. Skilled Therapy Services

  • Provide occupational therapy treatments under the direction and supervision of the Occupational Therapist (OT)
  • Deliver therapy interventions in accordance with physician orders and the established plan of care
  • Assist patients with therapeutic activities focused on improving daily living skills and functional independence
  • Support development of fine motor skills, coordination, and adaptive techniques for daily tasks

2. Patient Monitoring & Communication

  • Observe and report patient response to treatment, progress, and changes in condition to the supervising OT
  • Communicate patient concerns, safety issues, and therapy barriers promptly
  • Reinforce patient and caregiver education as directed by the OT

3. Documentation & Compliance

  • Complete timely and accurate treatment documentation, progress notes, and visit records
  • Ensure documentation supports medical necessity and therapy continuity
  • Maintain compliance with Medicare requirements, state regulations, and agency policies

4. Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with the OT, nurses, physicians, and interdisciplinary care team to support continuity of care
  • Participate in care conferences, discharge planning, and required staff meetings
  • Attend required in-services, competency reviews, and professional development activities

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program required. Current state OTA certification/licensure required. Minimum of one (1) year of experience in occupational therapy or related clinical setting preferred; home health experience preferred.
  • Home health or rehabilitation experience preferred
  • Current CPR certification required
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and auto insurance
  • Ability to pass background screening and all compliance requirements

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent travel to patient homes within assigned territory
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and assist patients as needed
  • Ability to perform therapy interventions in home environments
  • Ability to use electronic documentation systems and therapy equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and care team members

Work is performed in patient homes and community settings with exposure to variable environmental conditions, including pets, smoke, infectious diseases, and weather-related travel conditions.
