POSITION PURPOSE/MISSION:

Provide environmental leadership and oversight for one or more sites to ensure effective and efficient compliance with government and company requirements.  Act as company liaison with community and regulatory officials in relation to environmental matters.  Develop and maintain processes to ensure accurate, timely and complete environmental monitoring and reporting.  Partner with operations to support project work and problem solve operational environmental issues, providing guidance to optimize and strengthen compliance systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science or related field.
  • Seven plus years’ progressive environmental experience with three plus years’ supervisory or managerial experience.
  • Ability to effectively manage the safety, engagement, development, and performance of direct reports.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for sharing information and explaining environmental regulations to employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience interacting with and influencing regulatory agencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in engaging with others, learning their area of the business, and influencing behaviors to create a culture of compliance.
  • Experience managing capital projects and department budgets.
  • Ability to develop and manage compliance systems such as ISO 14001 management system.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Environmental Science or related field.
  • ISO 14001 Certified Auditor.
  • Professional organization affiliation and Certification such as CHMM, CEM, CEP or PE.
  • Experience managing environmental compliance in the steel industry.
  • Managerial experience providing team direction and prioritizing work based on risks and business needs.
  • Formal team training with demonstrated success from past team experiences.
  • Continuous Improvement, Six Sigma and/or Lean manufacturing experience.
  • ISO 14001 certified auditor.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Manage high performing compliance programs and inspire a culture of compliance for associated sites to achieve performance goals.
  • Maintain knowledge of current regulations and analyze proposed regulations affecting the business to address risks to the business, informing leadership, and implementing appropriate controls to sustain compliance. 
  • Timely impact analysis and support for projects and changes to the operations. 
  • Effectively manage priorities based on assessment of risks and business needs.
  • Support and collaboration with other members within the department to ensure highly effective processes across Charter Steel. 
  • Proactive identification and mitigation of risks to ensure the safety of self and others.
  • Follow Environmental, Quality and Safety Management System procedures and requirements.
  • Ability to meet the essential job requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation, as outlined in the job description.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the EHS Director

POSITION CHALLENGES:

  • Engaging and collaborating with operations and other departments across multiple businesses to ensure consistency in programs and processes.
  • Having a vision to understand future changes to permits, regulations, and operations to proactively address risks to the business.
  • Developing an in-depth understanding of manufacturing processes to recognize and mitigate risks to the business and environment.
