Baker Engineering, LLC’s (BE) core business centers around the design and development of high-tech, high-performance technologies for a variety of applications, from custom military and commercial engines to engine components, to the production of parts and mechanical assemblies for other industries. POSITION SUMMARY
The CMM Lab Supervisor is the hands-on technical leader for dimensional inspection and metrology activities. This position operates and programs Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) using PC-DMIS, operates and programs Keyence measurement systems, and ensures accurate, repeatable inspection results. The role develops standard methods, manages lab priorities and equipment readiness, and trains Quality Technicians on all three shifts to safely and consistently perform inspections in accordance with approved processes, customer requirements, and the AS9100 Quality Management System. The CMM Lab Supervisor also prepares and reviews inspection records and customer submission packages, including First Article Inspection (FAI) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) documentation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operate, program, troubleshoot, and optimize CMM equipment using PC-DMIS for first-piece, in-process, final layout, and capability inspections.
- Operate, program, troubleshoot, and optimize Keyence measurement systems for dimensional and visual inspection applications.
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, customer requirements, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to establish sound inspection strategies.
- Develop, validate, document, and maintain CMM and Keyence programs, including alignments, measurement strategies, fixturing requirements, revision control, and program backups.
- Verify inspection programs and results before release for production use and investigate unexpected, inconsistent, or out-of-tolerance findings.
- Plan and coordinate daily CMM lab workload based on production schedules, customer priorities, first-article needs, and inspection risk; communicate constraints and recovery plans to Quality, Engineering, and Production.
- Create standardized inspection methods, work instructions, visual aids, checklists, and training materials aligned with AS9100 requirements and internal procedures.
- Train, coach, and qualify Quality Technicians on all three shifts to operate CMM and Keyence equipment, execute approved programs, interpret results, complete required records, and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Maintain a training and qualification matrix, evaluate technician competency, and provide refresher training when processes, programs, equipment, or requirements change.
- Prepare, review, and maintain dimensional inspection reports and customer submission documentation, including AS9102 FAI packages, PPAP documentation, ballooned drawings, capability studies, and supporting objective evidence.
- Review inspection data for accuracy, completeness, traceability, and compliance before internal approval or customer submission.
- Support control plans, inspection plans, process validation, Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gage R&R) studies.
- Ensure inspection equipment is maintained, calibrated, verified, clean, secure, and available for use; coordinate service, calibration, software support, and preventive maintenance as needed.
- Maintain controlled records and program revisions in accordance with the Quality Management System, document-control requirements, and customer or regulatory retention requirements.
- Identify nonconforming product, protect product status, document findings, and communicate issues promptly in accordance with established nonconformance and escalation procedures.
- Support root-cause analysis, corrective actions, internal audits, customer audits, and continuous-improvement activities related to dimensional inspection and metrology.
- Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Programming, and Production during new-product introduction, process changes, fixture development, and inspection planning.
- Monitor lab performance and report measures such as inspection turnaround time, backlog, program completion, repeat inspection, equipment uptime, and technician qualification progress.
- Promote a clean, organized, safe, and controlled CMM lab environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
LEADERSHIP / SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This role provides functional leadership and technical direction to Quality Technicians across all three shifts. The position may have direct reports based on organizational needs. When direct reports are assigned, responsibilities may include work assignment, coaching, performance feedback, attendance and schedule support, and participation in hiring or corrective-action processes. The technical leadership, training, qualification, and lab-accountability responsibilities of this position apply whether or not direct reports are assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification, apprenticeship, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Minimum of five years of dimensional inspection or metrology experience in a precision manufacturing environment, including at least three years of hands-on CMM programming experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency programming and operating CMM equipment using PC-DMIS.
- Demonstrated experience programming and operating Keyence dimensional measurement equipment or comparable optical measurement systems, with the ability to become fully proficient on Baker equipment.
- Advanced ability to read engineering drawings and apply GD&T principles, including datum structures, feature control frames, and tolerance interpretation.
- Working knowledge of AS9100 or ISO 9001 requirements, document control, inspection traceability, nonconforming product control, and objective evidence.
- Experience preparing or supporting FAI, PPAP, dimensional layouts, ballooned drawings, and customer inspection reports.
- Proficiency using precision measurement tools such as micrometers, calipers, height gages, indicators, bore gages, surface-finish equipment, and optical measurement devices.
- Ability to train and coach employees with different experience levels and on different shifts using clear, standardized methods.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, organization, prioritization, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and make sound technical decisions while maintaining appropriate escalation and approval controls.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic quality or manufacturing systems.
- Ability to pass a drug screen and background investigation, including a nationwide criminal record search and other relevant background information deemed necessary by Baker.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate or bachelor's degree in quality, manufacturing, engineering technology, metrology, or a related field.
- PC-DMIS training or certification and advanced experience with offline programming, complex alignments, scanning, or multi-axis inspection.
- Formal Keyence programming or application training.
- Experience in an AS9100-certified aerospace, defense, power, propulsion, or other highly regulated precision manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of AS9102, AIAG PPAP, MSA, Statistical Process Control (SPC), and Gage R&R methods.
- Prior experience leading a metrology lab, coordinating inspection workload, or supervising and developing quality personnel.
- Experience with CNC machining processes, CAD models, model-based definition, and inspection fixture design.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Fine manual dexterity to handle parts, probes, fixtures, and precision measurement instruments.
- Ability to clearly see fine details on parts, drawings, measurement equipment, and computer screens.
- Ability to bend, reach, and position parts or fixtures as required for inspection.
- Ability to lift and move up to 30 lb frequently and up to 50 lb occasionally, with assistance or lifting devices when appropriate.

Climate-controlled shop and typical office or laboratory environment.
TRAVEL
This position may require travel up to 10% of the time.
POSITION TYPE
This is a full-time salaried position. Final FLSA classification should be confirmed by Human Resources based on assigned duties and reporting structure.
