About AIS

AIS, part of the 1HMX family of brands, is a global leader in Human Machine eXperience (HMX) solutions, delivering innovative, high-performance products that power the future of human interaction with technology. Our portfolio includes electro-mechanical assemblies, touch displays, and HMIs. With a focus on quality, precision, and customer satisfaction, we support a wide range of industries from our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities across Coeur d'Alene (Idaho), Taiwan, and Shenzhen.

Role Summary

AIS is looking for an Electrical Engineer who wants to drive hardware designs end to end - from schematic and PCB layout through prototype bring-up, EMI/EMC and signal integrity troubleshooting, agency certification, and release to manufacturing. This is a role for a self-starter who enjoys working through hard problems, works well with customers and factory teams, and takes personal responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Design

  • Design and own schematics for embedded electronics, including microcontroller/touch-controller subsystems, analog front-ends, power supplies, and sensor interface circuits.
  • Lay out PCBs in Cadence Allegro/OrCAD (or guide contract layout designers), balancing signal integrity, EMI/EMC, and manufacturability.
  • Select and qualify components (touch controllers, MCUs, connectors, passives) with sourcing/lifecycle risk in mind.
  • Build and debug prototypes on the bench: scope work, noise/EMI troubleshooting, thermal and power validation.
  • Design for manufacturability, EMC compliance, and reliability, incorporating industry-standard interfaces (RS-232/RS-485, USB, CAN, Ethernet, etc.).
  • Support development of Functional and Test Specifications and assist the factory test group with test program and fixture development.
  • Participate in design reviews with Manufacturing to confirm the product is producible.

Project & Customer Support

  • Support electrical project activities from costing through qualification and into production, coordinating with the Project Manager responsible.
  • Partner closely with firmware/software engineering to define hardware-software interfaces (register maps, timing, power states, test hooks).
  • Work with customers, under guidance from senior engineers, to help clarify design definitions and requirements.
  • Produce and maintain design documentation, fixtures, and tooling deliverables required to deliver a quality part on time.
  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with customers, vendors, and factory personnel.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant electronic hardware design experience.
  • Strong hands-on schematic capture and PCB layout experience (OrCAD Capture/Allegro, Altium, or similar).
  • Experience with sensor interface design; capacitive touch, resistive, or similar HMI sensing is a strong plus.
  • Working knowledge of designing for manufacturability, design for speed, and EMC compliance.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively with technicians, vendors, contractors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally as project needs require.

Preferred

  • Exposure to Statistical Quality Control/Inspection techniques or a Manufacturing/Manufacturing Engineering environment.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 practices and agency requirements such as FDA, TUV, CE/EC, FCC.
  • Experience supporting formal EMC/safety certification (UL, CE, FCC)
  • Basic exposure to FMEA analysis and Reliability Engineering methods (worst-case, stress, durability analysis, HALT).
  • Working knowledge of analog or RF design, host-based software drivers, or wireless HID technologies.
  • Experience with capacitive sensor electrode design on ITO or glass substrates.

Work Conditions

  • Some domestic and occasional global travel to support customers and AIS facilities.
  • Ability to work in lab, prototype shop, and manufacturing environments with appropriate PPE.

Equal Opportunity

AIS is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.
