Position Summary: 

The Crane Operator A is a senior-level role responsible for the safe and efficient operation of lattice boom and hydraulic cranes in support of port, terminal, and project operations. This position plays a critical role in handling bulk materials, cargo, and heavy equipment while ensuring compliance with safety regulations, operational procedures, and lift plans. The Crane Operator A serves as a lead operator on complex lifts and provides guidance to rigging crews and less-experienced personnel.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operate lattice boom and hydraulic cranes to safely load, unload, and move bulk materials, cargo, and heavy equipment.
  • Execute lifting operations in accordance with load charts, lift plans, and site-specific requirements.
  • Perform daily pre- and post-operation inspections to ensure cranes and associated equipment are in safe working condition.
  • Coordinate closely with riggers, signal persons, and ground crews to ensure safe and efficient lift execution.
  • Serve as a lead operator on complex or high-risk lifts, providing direction and oversight during operations.
  • Maintain accurate lift logs, inspection records, and operational documentation.
  • Adhere to all OSHA, MSHA, and company safety policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with supervisors, crew members, and operations personnel throughout all lifting activities.
  • Identify and report mechanical issues, safety concerns, or hazards promptly.
  • Assist with crane setup, teardown, and mobilization as required.
  • Support general port or project operations when crane work is not required.
  • Mentor and support less-experienced operators and crew members in safe operating practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support safe and efficient operations.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience operating lattice boom and hydraulic cranes in port, construction, or industrial environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise in reading and applying crane load charts, lift plans, and rigging principles.
  • Proven ability to operate safely in complex, high-traffic environments.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Strong understanding of crane safety standards, signaling, and operational best practices.

Preferred Experience:

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) certification or equivalent.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or ability to obtain.
  • Experience operating cranes in marine terminal or waterfront environments.
  • Experience with heavy lifts, bulk material handling, and vessel operations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, climb, and operate crane equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks as needed.
  • Ability to work at heights and in varying outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Required use of PPE (hard hat, safety vest, steel‑toe boots) in operational areas.

Work Environment:

  • Field-based role at marine terminals, construction sites, and industrial job locations.
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Fast-paced, safety-sensitive environment requiring strong focus, coordination, and communication.
  • Work schedules may include shift work, extended hours, weekends, and overtime based on operational demands.
