POSITION SUMMARY:

The Patient Sitter is responsible for providing continuous observation and monitoring of patients who are at risk of self-harm, suicide, or harm to others. The role is crucial in maintaining patient safety and ensuring a safe environment by minimizing the need for restraints through vigilant supervision. This position plays a key role in enhancing patient care and ensuring safety through diligent observation and prompt reporting of patient conditions.

The anticipated hourly rate for this position is a flat rate of $22.00. 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be trained in De-Escalation and MOAB training before sitting with a patient, this training and education is provided.
• EBSCO: De-escalating Pediatric Patients with Behavioral Health Conditions To provide information about de-escalating patients with behavioral health conditions, including reasons for de-escalation, precautions to maintain safety of patient and others, and strategies to de-escalate behaviors.
• MOAB Training MOAB training focuses on proactive strategies to prevent and manage aggressive behavior, emphasizing early intervention, communication skills, and personal safety techniques.

Certification:

• N/A

Licensure:

• Association* accredited course in Basic Life Support (BLS) (for clinical staff), or Heartsaver CPR AED (for nonclinical staff), and renewal on a regular basis, with up to a three-month grace period after the expiration date.

Skills:

• Strong observational skills.
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Basic understanding of infection control principles.

Work Experience:

• Previous experience in healthcare or a caregiving environment is advantageous.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Provide continuous observation of assigned patients unless relieved by a qualified person.
2. Monitor and report any changes in the patient’s condition or behavior to the patient's nurse.
3. Read to, play cards, or engage in games with patients to maintain a calming environment.
4. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff.
5. Notify nursing staff of patient needs and obtain assistance when necessary.
6. Document the presence and utilization of a sitter during the shift.
7. Adhere to infection control procedures to ensure a safe environment.
8. Assist nursing staff during patient interactions if requested.
9. Maintain constant attendance with the patient to ensure safety.
10. Utilize therapeutic communication to engage with the patient and de-escalate potential issues.
11. Respect patient privacy and confidentiality in all interactions.
12. Participate in training sessions and meetings to stay informed about patient care protocols.
13. Report any environmental hazards or concerns to the nursing staff.
14. Follow hospital policies and procedures related to patient safety and care.
15. Support the patient’s well-being by providing reassurance and company.
