Duties and Responsibilities


Unit Coordination & Operations

  • Coordinates daily unit operations to support patient flow, admissions, transfers, discharges, and overall Medical-Surgical Unit efficiency.
  • Organizes work priorities to support patient care goals, unit objectives, and timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, safe, and well-supplied unit environment.
  • Orders, stocks, tracks, and coordinates repair or replacement of unit supplies, equipment, forms, and materials according to hospital procedures.
  • Obtains, delivers, or routes equipment, supplies, specimens, and medical records as directed.

Clerical & Patient Record Support

  • Accurately processes provider orders, forms, work orders, and related documentation in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Maintains patient records, charts, face sheets, labels, consents, logs, reports, and electronic health record information accurately and timely.
  • Completes admission, transfer, discharge, and other required documentation according to established procedures.
  • Schedules diagnostic, therapeutic, and consultative services promptly and accurately.

Communication & Customer Service

  • Serves as a central communication point for the unit, responding promptly to phones, nurse call systems, staff requests, patients, families, and visitors.
  • Relays information accurately between nurses, providers, ancillary departments, patients, and families.
  • Uses appropriate, age-related communication techniques when interacting with patients and families.
  • Greets and assists patients, families, and visitors in a professional, compassionate, and helpful manner.
  • Escalates concerns, urgent needs, unusual developments, or issues affecting patient care to the appropriate RN or supervisor.

Safety, Emergency Response & Compliance

  • Responds appropriately to nurse call, fire panel, overhead codes, and other unit communication systems within role expectations.
  • Uses equipment according to manufacturer instructions, hospital procedures, and safety expectations.
  • Supports compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and hospital standards.

Telemetry / Monitor Support

  • Performs assigned Philips monitor functions, including telemetry admission, discharge, and cardiac monitoring support for telemetry patients within training and role expectations.

Qualifications


Required

  • Completion of High School or GED
  • Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with electronic health records (EHR)
  • Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking skills
  • AHA Basic Life Ssupport (BLS)
  • Basic Heart Rhythm Class

Preferred

  • Certified as a Nursing Assistant with the State of Washington.
  • Previous experience in a hospital or acute care setting, preferably Medical-Surgical
  • Experience with order entry systems or EHR platforms (e.g., Epic)
  • Completion of a Health Unit Coordinator training class or previous work experience in a similar role
  • Certification as a Health Unit Coordinator (NAHUC or equivalent)
