The City of Collinsville is accepting applications for a full-time position as IT Network Technician. Under the direction of the IT Director, the Network Technician will resolve helpdesk tickets, assist the Network Administrator in managing the city's wired and wireless networks and related infrastructure, and manage and assist in projects involving the installation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of IT systems. The Network Technician will be required to respond after-hours and on weekends for IT emergencies in a rotating on-call schedule.

Job Responsibilities

The duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Resolves helpdesk tickets for city users
  • Assists on projects with organizational scope and impact
  • Assists in cybersecurity efforts to secure the city's IT infrastructure, network, applications, resources, and data
  • Participates in the review, evaluation, and recommendation of solutions relating to hardware and software acquisitions and policy changes
  • Participates in research and development initiatives and aids in the implementation of new technologies
  • Performs troubleshooting on diverse software applications and hardware systems for city users
  • Troubleshoots and resolves complex problems involving network hardware, systems, or applications
  • Manages IP addressing, DHCP scopes/reservations, and DNS records
  • Operates network monitoring, logging, and alerting tools; produces routine reports; escalates issues as needed
  • Maintains configuration backups and device firmware/patch levels; assists in planning lifecycle replacements
  • Supports emergency operations as directed during incidents; follows documented incident response plan and disaster recovery plan
  • Coordinates with vendors and carriers; creates and tracks support tickets
  • Configures and maintains switching, VLANs, inter-VLAN routing, and access controls; documents port standards
  • Deploys and tunes wireless networks (AP placement, RF/channel/power planning); monitors SSID performance
  • Provides technical assistance, testing, and maintenance for IT systems
  • Supports FOIA and legal responses by exporting relevant records, logs, or configurations at the direction of the Network Administrator or the IT Director
  • Maintains and updates record keeping systems; documents projects; authors and maintains written instructions for other IT staff and end users
  • Coordinates, maintains, and enters applicable records such as but not limited to user account information; folder, network, or application permissions; access control levels
  • Performs or assists with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of city IT equipment including but not limited to racks, servers, firewalls, switches, access points, computers, desk phones, mobile devices, scanners, copiers, printers, and related equipment.
  • Pursues new knowledge and skills with respect to technology, equipment, applicable laws, regulations, standards, and/or systems with relevant education, training, and/or certifications
  • Provides new user onboarding training in coordination with the HR department as needed

Qualifications

  • Candidate must possess at least an Associate degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Management Information Systems, or a similar field.
  • Candidate must possess at least 2+ years' experience supporting enterprise computer networks and systems
  • Relevant IT certification(s) strongly preferred
  • A combination of education, relevant experience, and relevant certifications will be considered
  • Candidates must pass a criminal background investigation and have a valid driver's license

  • Knowledge
    • Strong understanding of networking principles (switching, routing, VLANs, DHCP, DNS), wireless technologies, security fundamentals, and change management concepts
  • Skills
    • Proactive and effective communicator-surfaces issues promptly, engages constructively in meetings, and consistently produces written communication that is clear, concise, and easy for both technical and non‑technical audiences to understand
    • Reliably assists and supports the IT Department's and the City's operations
    • MEWP certified or willing to achieve MEWP certification
  • Abilities
    • Able to take ownership of support issues and projects and resolve them in a timely manner
    • Able to handle multiple support issues, meet deadlines, and manage stress professionally in high-pressure situations
    • Proven ability to stay organized under pressure, maintaining clear systems for tracking work, prioritizing numerous responsibilities, and keeping office and work areas in good order
    • Strong sense of discretion and confidentiality required
    • Able to work professionally, respectfully, and effectively with staff and vendors in a diverse community and marketplace

Salary and Benefits

Salary range is $54,537.60 to $60,216.00 per year, depending on qualifications. This position is hourly, eligible for overtime and compensation time
