Position Purpose 

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Dean of Social Mission & Partnership & Director of Programs & Outcomes, the Pathway Programs Student Worker Pathway Programs Student Worker plays a crucial role in supporting the CUSM Medical Exploration Days (MED), Health Career Connection (HCC), Pathways to Medicine (P2M), the MCAT Office Hour, CJUSD Parent Engagement Programs, LAUNCH with Mentor Collective, Foster youth Independent Learning Programs and other pathways partnership programming offering K-12 students, undergraduates, and educators an engaging introduction to the field of medicine. This position involves leading presentations, conducting campus tours, coordinating on site engagement with pathways partners, guiding students through hands-on activities, fostering interactive learning experiences, tabling for local high schools and other pathways events, engaging in outreach to support enrollment in pathways programs, and contributing to the overall success of pathways programs and events. The Student Worker must have availability and flexibility to work a shift of two (2) to six (6) hours, up to a maximum of ten (10) hours a week, as determined by unit needs. 

Essential Function

  • Deliver engaging presentations outlining the pathway to medicine tailored for K-12 students. 
  • Co-facilitate and deliver training seminars for K-16 educators connected to pathways programs. 
  • Conduct informative tours of the CUSM Health Sciences campus, highlighting key facilities and areas relevant to the field of medicine.
  • Facilitate and guide K-12 students through hands-on demonstrations and activities using the clinical skills task trainers while ensuring a safe and educational experience.
  • Lead interactive sessions and hands-on activities aimed at providing insight into various aspects of the medical profession both on campus at CUSM and off campus at K-12 school sites.
  • Assist in the smooth execution of pathways partner events.
  • Provide both structured and semi-structured mentorship to pathways students with foundational skill sets in communication, relationship development, and acceptance of varying human identities. 
  • Ability to contribute to the development of curriculum, workshops, and other Pathways activities
  • Provide onsite support for pathways and partner learning sessions including but not limited to supporting partners in accessing CUSM onsite resources, liaising and communicating between CUSM staff and partners, and ensuring proper prep and ending for programs.
  • Travel to local sites/schools as assigned.
  • Maintain regular check-ins with supervisor to ensure academic progress for both pre-clerkship and clerkship courses.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Educational Qualifications  

  • Enrollment as a current CUSM MBS or MD student. 
  • Must be in good academic standing.

Student Workers receive email notifications of available shifts and must respond to email requests to let the department know of their availability to work. After hire, student workers may be assigned a primary pathways program but will also be required to contribute from time-to-time to other pathways programs as needed to ensure coverage of programs.
