DESCRIPTIONĀ 

Ā 

This is a working supervisory custodial position.Ā Ā An employee in this class, with technical supervision from the custodial services manager or assistant manager and administrative supervision from a building administrator,Ā is responsible forĀ the cleanliness and maintenance of the assigned facility and grounds.Ā Ā This individual works in conjunction with the Night Custodial Lead II to ensure the cleanliness of the building.Ā Ā The incumbent exercises general supervision over assigned custodians.Ā Ā Work is evaluated through observation while work is in progress and by inspection of completed assignments.Ā

ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIESĀ 

Ā

  • Coordinates and directs all aspects of routine building and grounds maintenance including general cleaning, snowĀ removalĀ and lawn mowingĀ 

  • Performs inspections to ensure building security and cleanliness of the buildingĀ 

  • Ensures custodial staff is trained to secure building and equipmentĀ 

  • Cleans buildings by sweeping, dusting, mopping, scrubbing, sealing, washing surfaces, vacuuming, buffing surfaces, etc.Ā 

  • Performs ground maintenance by mowing, watering,Ā sweepingĀ and weedingĀ 

  • Moves and stores furniture and equipmentĀ 

  • Removes snow and iceĀ 

  • MustĀ be available for emergency calls.Ā 

  • Maintains a school system facilityĀ 

  • Periodically inspects assigned areas and tasks to ensure work is performedĀ in accordance withĀ establishedĀ Ā 

  • standardsĀ 

  • Maintains necessary records and prepares reports, requisitions and receives suppliesĀ 

  • Issues cleaning materialsĀ 

  • Maintains a basic custodial supply reserveĀ 

  • Cleans, lubricates,Ā adjustsĀ and performs other preventive maintenance on buildings and equipment.Ā 

  • Notifies the principal of necessary repairs which are beyond the scope of the assigned custodial personnelĀ 

  • Assigns and supervise custodians relevant to tasksĀ 

  • MayĀ be responsible forĀ employee evaluations and relevant documentationĀ 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.Ā

  • The employeeĀ is responsible forĀ the use of safety devices and protective equipmentĀ in order toĀ minimize the frequency and severity of work-related accidents. The employeeĀ is responsible forĀ using safe practices and methods in the operation and supplies related to their job.Ā 

  • The employee is further responsible for correcting any conditions within the building or grounds that may be hazardous to employees, students, or staff assigned to the building and reporting same to theĀ appropriate administrator.Ā

  • Ability to understand warning instructions on cleaning items.Ā 

  • Ability to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.Ā 

  • Ability toĀ operateĀ cleaning and grass cutting machines.Ā

  • Ability to learn and practice acceptable cleaning methods.Ā

  • Requires extensive walking, stooping, pushing, carrying, climbing,Ā bendingĀ and lifting.Ā 

  • AbilityĀ to pickĀ up andĀ carryĀ 65 pounds.Ā 

  • AbilityĀ to stand for prolonged periodsĀ ofĀ time.Ā 

  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs.Ā 

  • Ability to hear the normally spoken word at 25 feet.Ā

The person selected for this position must meet all requirements of the physical examination administered by a medical service selected by the Howard County Department of Education.Ā

Working HoursĀ 

  • The duty day for a full-time position is 8.5 hours per dayĀ including an unpaid duty-freeĀ thirty-minuteĀ lunch.Ā 

  • This position isĀ designatedĀ as an ā€œemergency employeeā€ under the AFSCME negotiated agreement and may require a response during inclement weather and other emergencies. When work cannot be scheduled during the school year during normal hours, weekend/evening and shift work may beĀ requiredĀ as allowed by the AFSCME negotiated agreement.Ā Ā

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATIONĀ

CompensationĀ 

This is a 12-month per year position in the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) employee unit. TheĀ current salary rangeĀ for this position is Grade 7 on the CustodialĀ Salary Scale. Step placement will beĀ in accordance withĀ the salary procedures of the Howard County Public School System and the AFSCME Master Agreement which considers relevant prior experience. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position isĀ not exemptĀ from overtime.

RetirementĀ 

Membership in the Maryland State Retirement Agency (MSRA) pension plan is a mandatory condition of employment for all employees who meet the eligibility and membership criteria defined in the State Personnel and Pensions Article and the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR). A qualifying employee cannot reject membership, nor can an ineligible employeeĀ electĀ membership. The annual contribution to the pension plan will be 7% of an employee’s annual salary.Ā Ā
