Overview

Position Summary

Thompson Facilities Services is hiring Facilities Technician I who is responsible for performing routine maintenance, repairs, and preventive maintenance to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of campus facilities. This position supports the upkeep of academic buildings, administrative offices, residence halls, athletic facilities, and other campus properties by maintaining building systems and responding to maintenance requests. Facilities Technician I work closely with the Facilities Management team to provide a safe, clean, and functional environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.


Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on campus buildings, equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Complete preventive maintenance on building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, doors, locks, and mechanical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair basic electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, painting, and mechanical issues.
  • Replace light fixtures, ceiling tiles, filters, hardware, flooring materials, and other building components as needed.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance work orders and emergency repair requests.
  • Conduct routine inspections to identify maintenance needs, equipment deficiencies, and safety concerns.
  • Assist with room setups, furniture moves, and campus event support.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe maintenance shops, storage areas, and workspaces.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, fire safety, environmental, and university safety regulations.
  • Accurately document completed work orders, preventive maintenance activities, and equipment inspections.
  • Assist outside contractors performing maintenance, renovation, or repair work.
  • Participate in weather-related emergencies, snow removal, and other campus operational support activities as needed.
  • Support energy conservation and sustainability initiatives through proper maintenance and operation of building systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • One to three years of experience in facilities maintenance, building maintenance, or a related skilled trade preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Valid driver's license may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of building maintenance practices and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maintenance manuals, work orders, and technical instructions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety procedures and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors.
  • Commitment to quality workmanship and customer service.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Manual dexterity to operate maintenance tools and equipment safely.
  • Ability to work around mechanical equipment, chemicals, dust, noise, and varying temperatures while using appropriate PPE.

Work Environment

  • Campus-wide facilities, including academic buildings, residence halls, administrative offices, athletic facilities, and outdoor spaces.
  • May require occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, or on-call availability to respond to emergency maintenance needs.
  • This is an essential position which may require work during inclement weather.
